His family moved to Caldwell, Idaho in 1930 where he lived until he graduated from Caldwell High School. During his time in Idaho he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. He attended the University of Idaho, boxing and playing football for the Vandals from 1948 to 1951. He was drafted into the Marines after graduation and served for 2 years. After his retirement he enjoyed traveling and visiting friends and family across the United States. He is remembered as a gentle giant and successful teacher in and out of the classroom. He was inducted into to the Salinas Valley Sports Hall of fame in August of this year, a night that helped him to see how many lives he touched through out the years.
