Larry G. McManigle Obituary

Aug 01, 2016 - Jan 31, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Larry G. "Mac" McManigle, age 84, of Pennsylvania Ave., in Brookville, Pa., passed away on Monday, Oct. 31, 2016, as a patient of the Penn Highlands Brookville Hospital. Larry was born on Aug. 13, 1932, in Brookville, Pa., to the late Alonzo C. and Christine (Duncan) McManigle. On Aug. 7, 1964, Larry married Mary Lou (Snyder) McManigle in DuBois, Pa. For almost 49 years they built a life together involving their community, their family, and their faith; Mary Lou preceded him in passing on April 17, 2013. Larry graduated from Brookville High School with the class of 1950. After high school he went on to Slippery Rock University where he earned his Bachelor's of Education. After college graduation he joined the United States Army, and honorably served his country from 1954 - 1956. He was a specialist 3rd Class, awarded the Good Conduct Medal at Fort Sill, Okla., while serving with the 18th Field Artillery Battalion. After leaving the military he started his first teaching job working at the Summerville High School. Eventually, when the school district consolidation took place, he began working at the Brookville High School. He taught both mathematics and health until he retired in 1993. Multiple generations of families had him as a teacher in school but most notably he is known for his involvement as a high school basketball coach. Larry coached basketball from 1960 - 1974, and then he picked it up again from 1987 until his retirement in 1993. He has an all time winning record of 261 - 229. He also coached football for Brookville. Larry was an active member of the Brookville Presbyterian Church and he enjoyed attending with his family. Basketball was his passion, but he loved spending time with his wife Mary Lou, and watching his only grandchild, Katelyn Myers, play softball. Larry was a leader within our small community. Because of his dedication to personal growth through hard work and education, he improved the lives of the many people that had the privilege of being mentored by him. His memory and example will carry on through the many stories and memories of those who respectfully remember him as their teacher, as their coach, and as their patriarch. Larry is survived by one daughter, Lisa McManigle of Brookville, Pa.; one son, John McManigle of Brookville, Pa.; two sisters, Sandra Beatty of Brookville, Pa., Belva Thomas of Brookville, Pa.; and one granddaughter, Katelyn Myers of Brookville, Pa. In addition to his wife and parents, Larry is preceded in death by one brother, Dick McManigle, and one sister, Dorothy Wetzell. Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2016, from 2–4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m. at the McKinney–d'Argy Funeral Home, ltd, 345 Main St., Brookville, PA 15825. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016, at the Presbyterian Church, 100 S. White St., Brookville, PA 15825, beginning at 11 a.m., and officiated by the Rev. Nathan Royster. Interment will take place at the Emerickville Lutheran Cemetery, Pine Creek Twp., Jefferson Co., Pa. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Brookville Raider Round Ball Club, PO Box 232, Brookville, PA 15825, or to the Presbyterian Church of Brookville.
