Johnny was born to Arthur Gipson and Rosemary Jones-Gipson in Rosanky, Texas on December 03, 1943. He was called home on Wednesday March 2nd 2022, at 6:00am surrounded by his family and loves ones.

Johnny was born and raised in Rosanky, Texas for the first ten years of his live before his family decided to move to Chicago with the rest of their family. Johnny attended and graduated from South Shore International High School in 1960. Johnny was employed as a police officer with the Chicago police department for 28 years. He possessed an impeccable work ethic and took much pride in his masonry skills.  Johnny confessed his love for God at an early age and was brought up in St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church. He dedicated his life to faithfully serving the Lord. He held many positions in the church as a Sunday School Teacher,  Choir Member and Treasurer.

Johnny enjoyed making fruit preserves and jelly. He was an amazing cook and baked the best biscuits. He also loved fishing and watching football. One of his favorite teams was former NFL team Houston Oilers and of course the Chicago Bears. His least favorite team was the Dallas Cowboys and he enjoyed teasing Cowboy fans after they lost by calling and asking what was the final score of the game. His ultimate favorite past time was spending time with his grandchildren. 

Johnny was married for 25 years to Katherine Jean Sterling-Gipson. Together they shared two children together; the late Rodney Gipson (Crystal Gipson) and Diatris Gipson in Chicago, Illinois. Johnny also took on a major role in helping to raise a Niece- Shannon. He is survived by six grandchildren who often took turns in competing with each other claiming to be PawPaw’s favorite grandchild, he loved them all equally.

Johnny was later joined in matrimony to Marjorie Baker in March of 2001. His extended family grew to include Ms. Baker’s four children- Ricky, Toni, Patricia, Tommie and nine grandchildren including his little “Candy Buddies” twins Aiden and Taylor whom he adored.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 21 years Marjorie Baker. His Daughter Diatris Gipson, Eight Sisters-Stellamae Gipson of Pflugerville,Tx, Rosemary Clemons (Willie), Linda Gipson, Arlene Bradford (Alfred Sr.), Darlene Wright (Homer) of Austin, Tx, Dora Gipson, Debra Gipson of Manor, Tx and Ardie Mayberry (Rev. Ervin Mayberry Sr.) of Columbus, Tx.

Six Grandchildren- Keanya Gipson Jalen Gipson, Lauren Beckford, Maya Johnson, Sunni Johnson , and Kayla Johnson.
