This obituary is administered by:
Jane Ozley PooleMurfreesboro, TNJane Ozley Poole, a loved and highly regarded teacher for fifty-one years in Murfreesboro, died peacefully of natural causes on January 21, 2017. She was 84 years old. Mrs. Poole was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Finis Winston Poole. She is survived by her daughter Lucinda Poole Cockrell, her son-in-law Dale Cockrell, both of Lincoln, Vermont, and grandson Sam Cockrell and his partner Emily Dawn Janowick, both of New York City. She is also survived by her "adopted son" Bradley Scott Norton and his wife Mary Ellen of Novi, Michigan, and his daughters, Cara Norton of Columbus, OH, and Alexandra Norton of Philadelphia, PA. Her parents, Lex Clifton Ozley and Lucille Harris Ozley of Calera, Alabama, predeceased her.Mrs. Poole was born on September 5, 1932, in Calera, Alabama, and reared in that town. After graduation from high school, she attended the University of Montevallo in Alabama before transferring to the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, from where she received her B.S. degree in Elementary Education. She went on to receive a M.Ed. degree in Reading from Middle Tennessee State University in 1972 and an Ed.S. in Curriculum and Instruction in 1978, also from MTSU.From 1955 to 1971 Mrs. Poole was a second-grade teacher in Murfreesboro schools, first Mitchell-Neilson School, then Hobgood School, Bellwood School, and MTSU Campus School. A generation of Murfreesboro citizens received foundational skills in her classroom. In 1975 she moved to MTSU where she taught for twenty-five years in the Elementary and Special Education Program of the School of Education. She retired as an Associate Professor from MTSU in 2000, but continued to mentor and oversee young men and women in their student teaching until 2015. Mrs. Poole was the co-author of three books in the areas of Language Arts, Reading, and Self-Concept. She gave countless presentations to both the mighty and the very young, all of whom learned from and enjoyed the experience. Among her many awards and honors, she received the MTSU Foundation's Outstanding Teacher Award, the Outstanding Public Service Award from Gamma Beta Phi, and the Service to Education Award from Kappa Delta Pi. Her legacy is defined by the shape she gave to the minds and methods of the thousands of her students, many of whom became teachers themselves. More than legacy, though, she also brought to those around her a joyous approach to life. In fact, to be in Jane Poole's immediate presence was generally to be in the swirl of a party or party-planning. No one loved an event and people more than she did, and few gave, organized, or decorated for more parties, showers, dinners, and receptions than Jane Poole. The mold was broken when Jane Poole was born and cannot be re-forged. All who knew her celebrate her remarkable life and mourn her passing.Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at Woodfin Memorial Chapel, with David Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 12:00 noon until time of the service. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the ASPIRE fund, College of Education at MTSU or the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation, www.rls.org.
