LIEBEL-WECKOWICZ, Helen PaulineHelen Liebel-Weckowicz died Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Capital Care Lynnwood in Edmonton. Helen Pauline Grit Liebel was born on June 17, 1930 in Manhattan, New York City, USA to Anni Liebel (nee Bonk) and Emil Liebel. Both parents had emigrated from Germany. She graduated from Brooklyn College 1952 and received an MA in 1953 and a PhD in History 1959 from Northwestern University, Illinois, and received a Fulbright grant to study at the University of Marburg, West Germany 1955-57. She worked on the US Natl. Archives Project for Microfilming and Screening Captured War Documents 1954-55.She immigrated to Canada August 1962 and became a professor of history at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. She was a member of the American History Association and wrote many papers and articles appearing in professional journals.In 1966 she married Thaddeus Eugene Weckowicz, Psychologist and fellow professor (deceased in August 2000). She and husband Teddy traveled extensively to Europe, South America, the Galapagos Islands, Japan and the United States. Together they wrote a book "History of Abnormal Psychiatry". Teddy died August 2000.Helen is survived by a sister, Clara Horn, 85, in Windsor, Connecticut, USA and a brother, Alfred Liebel, 82, in Belair, Maryland, USA and many grandnephews and nieces.A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017 at 10:30 a.m., at Holy Cross Cemetery, 14611 Mark Messier Trail, Edmonton.To send condolences, please visit: www.connelly-mckinley.com
