A Heavenly Departure
On June 7, 1945, Aaron Kirkwood Sr. and his wife Ethel Vivian had their first-born child. This child would be a baby girl and they named her ""Genie V Kirkwood"". Genie gave her life to Christ at the age of 10 where she remained faithful to her lord and savior until her last breath. Genie would become the eldest of four siblings (Bettye, Marcia, Kenneth, and Aaron Jr.). Genie grew up in Houston, Texas. Genie was enthusiastic about education throughout her formative years. After high school, she attended Texas Southern University and graduated with a Major in English.
Upon attaining her college degree, Genie began full time employment with the United States Postal Service. Genie served as National President to the Network organization, which was premised on promoting women of color across the United States Postal Service. Genie would go on to work for the Postal Service for over 30 years before retiring.
Genie was the mother of two beautiful children, Stefanie Sorrell and Jason Sorrell. Genie was a devoted mother who was committed to her children being educated in the classroom and present in the church.
Genie held a great friendship with Roy Sorrell that evolved to a loving couple and becoming his wife and eternal life partner. Genie and Roy were married for over 35 years.
Genie and Roy were truly partners in all that they did, from traveling the country to attending sporting events, they were inseparable.
Genie was passionate about supporting others and often volunteered for West Clinic and proudly supported organizations that benefited the welfare of women in all communities.
Genie leaves to cherish her memories: her loving husband, Roy Sorrell; two children, Stefanie Sorrell and Jason Sorrell (Wunita); two children by marriage, Andrew Sorrell (Cynthia) and Matthew Sorrell; five grandchildren, Kanesha Johnson, James McGruder, Jordan Snow, Andrea Sorrell and Andrew John Sorrell; and five great grandchildren, Kailyn Velez, Khloe Velez, Moriah McGruder, Jeremiah McGruder and Kai Snow; one sister, Bettye Davis (Lawrence); and two sister in laws, Ann Sorrell and Susan Lash(Tim).
