A life well lived

Fannie Mae “Mrs. Dova” Fields, 96, passed away September 1, 2020 in Chattanooga. She was born in Chickamauga, GA to the late Sam Porter and Fannie Walden Porter.  She was educated in the Walker County School System and employed at Crystal Springs Mill for many years.  She was a member of New Horizon Baptist Church. Her motherly wits were firm and loving.  She taught us to love God and treat people with kindness and work hard.  She always took care and fed anyone.  Her passion was gardening; her yard stayed immaculate.  She loved to dance; her favorite saying was “Fannie Mae Fields like to dance and kick up my heels” and that she did! She was the last of 21 children. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Wilburn Fields, Sr., Chickamauga, GA; father, Sam Porter, Chickamauga, GA; mother, Fannie Porter, Milton, FL; daughter, Nancy Clark, Brooklyn, NY; 20 brothers and sisters; 6 grandchildren. Survivors include daughters, Johnnie Pheonix, Brooklyn, NY; Eva Fields, Chattanooga, TN; Charlotte (Clarence) Anderson; Chattanooga, TN; sons, Wilburn Fields, Jr., Chattanooga, TN, Charles Fields, Chickamauga, GA, William Fields, Chattanooga, TN; reared grandchildren, Pheobe Fields, Larry Pheonix, Timothy Fields, Sabrina Fields, Fredrick Fields, all of Chattanooga, TN; 30 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 40 great-great grandchildren; special friend, Betty McKinley; the family wishes to thank the staff at Alexian Brothers; bus driver, Mr. Harold. Services will be held privately. Arrangements by John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Avenue. 423.225.7213
