This obituary is administered by:
Edward William HathwayVentura, CA Edward William Hathway passed away peacefully on February 16, 2017 surrounded by his family, overlooking Two Trees on his beloved Ventura foothills. A two-time lung cancer survivor, Ed persevered through illness to live a full life filled with family, friends, and Christ. Ed's family moved from England to California in 1918. He was born on March 4, 1926 in his family home on Ocean Avenue in Ventura. Ed was the third child to his parents, Harry Hubert and Amy, and spent his youth in Ventura and Ojai before entering the U.S. Navy at age 17 in 1944. In the Navy, Ed was stationed in the South Pacific on the USS Hoggatt Bay as a Plane Captain. After he was injured in an on-deck explosion in 1945, Ed was awarded the Purple Heart. After discharge, Ed and his brother, Robert, ran a logging business in Guerneville, California. Later Ed returned to his hometown, Ventura, where he began his 40-year career at Getty Oil, a company dedicated to Ed's shared values of family, friendship, and hard work. In 1948, Ed met and married his darling, "Dee". They were married on December 26, 1948. In 1952, they welcomed their daughter, Sharon, followed by their son, Mark, in 1956. Ed was an active member of the Ventura Church of Christ, playing on the church league softball team and spending their family vacations at Summer Bible Camp. He was also a talented mechanic and builder, helping to build the little league field that Mark played on as well as the new Ventura Church of Christ, which opened in 1960. The focus of Ed's retirement years were his five grandkids and two great-grandkids. Never missing a graduation or ball game, Ed was a devoted "Popper". Ed and Dee also loved to travel with friends, driving their RV around the country as well as through Alaska and Canada. They enjoyed trips to England to visit Ed's relatives and often hosted English visitors in California. Ed is pre-deceased by his beautiful daughter, Sharon, his siblings, Robert and Joyce, and nephews, Scott, Robert, and Ronald. He is survived by his wife, DeLoyce; his sister, Marsha; his son, Mark; his grandkids, Matthew, Courtney, Ryan Sr., Cameron, Ryan Jr., and Elijah; as well as his devoted nieces and nephews, who lovingly refer to him as "Uncle Ted". The Hathway family would like to thank Dr. J.N. Warwar, Dr. John Handley, Drs. Tom and Lynn Kong and Community Memorial Hospital for their steadfast care for Ed. A visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, in Ventura. Ed will be buried next to Sharon on February 22 in a private ceremony at Santa Paula Cemetery officiated by Minister Dave Schulze and lifelong friend, Ken Luper. A memorial service will be held at Ventura Church of Christ on Saturday, March 4, at 11:00 am, Ed's 91st birthday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Ventura Church of Christ Scholarship Program: 5401 Bryn Mawr Ventura, CA 93003. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to TedMayrFuneralHome.com.
