Earl Adrian Sibley, Jr., 86, of Ellensburg, WA (formerly of Seattle) died peacefully at home in the presence of his loving wife on Saturday, August 3, 2013. Earl was born on September 13, 1926 in Devil's Lake, ND. He had been a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in Iwo Jima, something he was finally able to talk about in later years.Earl was a civil engineer by profession with a B.S. from North Dakota State University and a master's degree from Kansas State University. He began his career teaching at Kansas State University, the University of Idaho, and Washington State University. In 1960 he joined Shannon & Wilson, Inc., a nationally and internationally known engineering firm headquartered in Seattle. He rose steadily in the firm, becoming manager of the Seattle office in 1968, president of the firm in 1976, and Chairman of the Board in 1979; positions he held until his retirement in 1996.During his career Earl was involved in many significant engineering projects including interstate highways, missile silos in the north-central states, dams and railroads throughout the western states, and numerous unstable slope problems. He was recognized by his professional peers in 1979 with the Engineer of the Year award from the Consulting Engineers Council of Washington. However, Earl was not just an engineer; he was also an astute businessman who forged new paths for his profession in the areas of risk management and insurance, business development, and employee benefits.Earl was an enthusiastic member of Seattle Rotary No. 4 and was known for his welcoming smile and sharp wit. He will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues in the engineering and business community.Earl was preceded in death by the love of his life Shirley in 2008 and grandson Joshua in 1997. He is lovingly survived by his wife Joanne (Teasley) of Ellensburg, daughters: Susan (Matt) King of Seattle, Jacki Sibley of Ellensburg and Kelly (Kevin) Maher of Ames, Iowa, grandchildren Erinn and Jamie King, Adam and Miranda Maher, and great-grandson Mateo. He had a wonderful sense of humor that will be sorely missed.
