West Hartford - Doris Rand Frink, 98, formerly of Waterford and Groton, passed away Nov. 25 at the Hebrew Health Center in West Hartford. Doris will be remembered by her family and friends as a warm and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother - a woman who loved her gardens, laughter, community service and desserts. In her last days, she welcomed chocolate milkshakes and ice cream.Doris was born on Sep. 28, 1918, in New London, the daughter of Carla and Charles Hansen, Norwegian immigrants. She attended St. Mary's Elementary School and graduated from Williams Memorial Institute (WMI) and the New London School of Business all in New London. Employed by General Dynamics, Electric Boat in Groton, she worked as a stenographer for many years. She worked as secretary for the Girl Scout Regional Office in New London and receptionist for Dr. George, an ophthalmologist in New London. Later in life, she was a sales associate at Sassafras, a women's clothing shop in East Lyme. Her stenography skills were used throughout her life, writing notes and myriad lists in shorthand, a lost art.She married Robert K. Frink on March 28, 1941, at St. Mary's Rectory. She and Robert spent most of their lives at 127 Niantic River Road, Waterford. Robert died in 2007. Doris volunteered at the Waterford Country Day School, the Seaside Medical Center and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. She is a former member of the Lawrence + Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Friends of Harkness, the Waterford Historical Society and the Waterford Women's Club where she served a term as president. In retirement, Doris and Robert often volunteered together believing in the importance of serving their community. They were blessed to be a devoted couple for 66 years. Doris told the story that, while in their 80's, volunteering at Lawrence + Memorial, she in the lobby shop, he as patient advocate, Robert arrived to take her to lunch. "He winked at me, and my little heart flipped," she confessed.Doris is survived by her daughter, Carla Segal and her husband, Louis, of Highland Falls, N.Y.; her son, Bob Frink and his wife, Lynn, of Noank; and her former son-in-law, Frank Wilson and his wife, Florence, of East Lyme. She has seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and several dear cousins.Donations in her memory may be made to the Lawrence + Memorial Development Fund.A memorial service will be private.
