Clinton Jones Obituary

Oct 17, 1928 - Jul 04, 2015

This obituary is administered by:

Clint Jones was a quiet, modest man who avoided personal attention. Yet he left us at age 86 with flags flying on the 4th of July. His departure on that day was fitting for he was the son of a highly honored WWI flying ace and the husband of a woman who was a direct descendant of the Revolutionary War heroine, Mary Lindley Murray.

Clint was born on October 17, 1928 in Sacramento to Clinton L. Jones Jr. and Edith Marie Fredericks Jones. His family and oldest friends knew him as “Bud.” He had one sibling, Gertrude (Mrs. Ludy Langer) and his only surviving blood relatives are her five children, Janet Langer of San Mateo, Anne Langer of Reno, Martha Langer of Las Vegas, Michael Langer of Antelope and William Langer of Sacramento.

Clint graduated in Economics from the University of California in Berkeley in 1951 and served with the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant 1952 -1953. He spent his entire business career with Wells Fargo Bank where his assignments included the opening Manager of the Greenbrae Branch and the bank Representative in Sydney, Australia. After retiring, he served on the Marin County Grand Jury as Foreman in 1985. One of his fellow jurors remarked that Clint showed “Stellar leadership qualities.” In the early 1980s he also served as President of the Board of Directors of the Buckelew Programs, San Rafael.

In 1990 he married Mary (Mimi) Lindley Murray Griffin and in 1993 they moved from Ross and Kentfield to Tiburon. The couple traveled to Russia and Europe and explored the United States and Canada. Favorite trips in California were to the Tahoe basin, Yosemite and annual excursions to the Carmel Bach Festival, with many happy weekends at the family cottage on the Bolinas Lagoon. Along with Mimi, Clint was an ardent supporter of the Bolinas Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, SFMOMA and the Smithsonian. His other interests included architecture, especially the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, history and nature conservation. He enjoyed hiking, dogs, dominoes and bird watching. Mimi Griffin-Jones died on March 7, 2015. She is survived by her four daughters Linda Henke of Salinas, Anne Lynn of Aptos, Carol Griffin of San Rafael and Joan Griffin of Novato and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

At Clint’s request, funeral arrangements are private. Donations are encouraged to the “UC Berkeley Foundation – Clinton Jones III Scholarship Assistance Fund” at UC Berkeley, University Relations, PO Box 774 Berkeley, CA 94701-0774.
