Clare Victor Herriman passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013. Clare was 84 years old and a lifetime resident of the Tawases. He was born on Sept. 6, 1928 to Earl and Loretta (Mills) Herriman, also residences of Iosco County. Clare was a 1946 graduate of Tawas Area High School where he played both basketball and baseball. As a basketball player he was a high scorer and was given the opportunity to play against the Globe Trotters. He was a supporter of the games by regularly attending both the junior varsity and varsity basketball games. His love of the school led him to serve 16 years on the Tawas Area School Board. After graduating, Clare went to work for the United States Gypsum Company in Alabaster, where he worked for 44 years and retired as a quarry foreman. While working with USG, Clare played golf and baseball on the company team. Clare also played for the Tawas Area Minor League receiving trophies for "most valuable player" and for "batting over .500." Today Clare is in the Northeastern Michigan Baseball Hall of Fame. Clare's love and hunting and fishing led him to be written up in the Bay City Times as the hunter with 60 years of 60 bucks, with the 60th buck being a 10 pointer. Before passing, he was able to increase that number to 63. As a fisherman, Clare speared through the ice a northern pike, 46 inches long, weighing 26 pounds, with help from his grandson, Camron. Clare was a 32nd degree Mason and was an active member for over 50 years, serving as Master of Lodge No. 274 multiple times. He sat in various lodges around the country including the Lodge at the George Washington Masonic Temple in Alexandria, Va. The Mason signing in before Clare was President Gerald Ford. Clare was an active participant in the local Shiner's and the Hillbilly Clubs. Clare at on time was a Justice of the Peace for Tawas Township. Clare was adored by his family and they cherished the time they spent together, especially the stories that Clare could tell. Clare is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Herriman, and his four loving children, Harold Chris (Pamela) Herriman of Periora, Ariz., Sherry Herriman of Annapolis, Md., Craig (Monica) Herriman of East Tawas and Harvey (Marilyn) Herriman of Whittemore; five grandchildren, Diana (Jim) Herriman Rholer of Alexandria, Va., Mark (Kelly) Herriman of Collerville, Tenn., Camron (Amber) Herriman of Evansville, Wyo., Mallari Herriman of East Tawas and Eugene Herriman of East Tawas; and two great grandchildren, Sydney and Callie. Clare has two surviving siblings; Dorothy Curtis of Lansing and Elwood "Woody" Herriman of Davidson; many nieces, nephews and cousins and dear friends. Preceding Clare in death are brothers; Ina, Harold, Allen, Earl "Lyn," Olen and Leland "Lee." Clare also will be missed by his many friends at Wilber Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. at Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City with Reverend Brenda Klacking officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Masonic Service being held at 7 p.m.; and visitation will continue on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Clare's family will also welcome friends at the funeral home on Monday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral.
