BURTON COHEN Obituary

Mar 12, 1949 - Jan 17, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Burton Cohen March 12, 1949 - September 17, 2017. Burton Cohen was a good man. He was a man who lived ethically and who knew intuitively what was the right thing to do, and he did it. He loved his family and his friends and all who knew him loved him back for his loyalty, kindness, wisdom, unmatched sense of humor, and his big heart. He was funny from morning to night, and he always knew the right thing to say. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 68. He left us too soon, but Burton had a great life. He knew how to have fun and was an enormously devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and a good friend to so many. His friendships were extraordinarily diverse and he treasured each of them. Burton Cohen was born on March 12, 1949, in Fort Worth, TX, to Dr. Frank Cohen, the first full-time pediatrician in Fort Worth, and Helen (Markusfeld) Cohen, who shared her dry sense of humor and card-playing skills with her son. He and his sister Susan lived a wonderful life in Forth Worth. After graduating from the University of Texas Austin with a history degree, he earned his law degree from Southern Methodist University. A law firm from El Paso recruited him and this community has been his beloved home for 43 years. One of Burton's happiest moments in life came in 1996 when he married his wife and best friend Cynthia Graff Cohen. Cindy introduced Burton to museums, art, cuisine, and culture. Burton introduced Cindy to Las Vegas. Together they enjoyed many trips to Coronado Island and family get-togethers and he kept her laughing for 21 years. He was a keen observer of human nature He was a master story-teller who entertained us all with stories from his youth, his years in Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity at UT, and his life. Whether at the poker table or in court, his stories and comments reached legendary status. Burton was a man's man with an encyclopedic memory of sports events and athletes. He was a passionate Chicago Cubs fan and personally knew many players from the 1960s. We are glad that he had the lifelong joy of watching his Cubs win a year ago. Burton will forever be in our memory, loved by more people than we can count, especially his wife Cindy, his daughter Hally Cohen in Los Angeles, and his son Greg Cohen, daughter-in-law Mary Glazier Cohen, and his beloved and adored grandchildren Katie, Seth and Charlie in Dallas. They were all his closest friends. He is forever in the hearts of Susan and brother-in-law Ronald Grodsky and their children Jeff, Scott, and Amy from Longmeadow, MA; his mother- and father-in-law Jean and Richard Graff of Ashburn, VA; his brother-in-law Rick Graff from The Woodlands; sister-in-law Judy Graff Walker from Bealeton, VA; nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless friends and co-workers, including long-time secretary Diana Perez. Funeral services will be at Temple Mt. Sinai at 4408 N. Stanton on Wednesday, September 20, at 10 a.m. Pallbearers will be Ronald Grodsky, Jeffrey Grodsky, Scott Grodsky, Amy Grodsky Ratner, Rick Graff, George Elias. Honorary pallbearers include Osama Azzam, Robert Beckoff, Doug Borrett, Alan Borschow, Kenny Clarence, Ray Daily, Ramsey Esper, Saul Frank, Alan Goldfarb, Lynn Gore, Chris Haynes, Dean Hester, Gil Holland, Andy Khatami, Ernie Koury, Omar Koury, Bob May, Mike Miles, Alex Neill, Walt Passero, Mike Robalin, Len Schermer, and Mike Yardeni.
