WARD, Betty LindseyBetty Lindsey Ward passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 24, 2016, in Austin, Texas. She was 88 years old. She is survived by her son Lindsey Ward and wife Janie, daughter Elena Ward, granddaughter Karis Lange and husband Ryan, great-grandsons Cash and Riley, and granddaughter Micaiah Ward. Betty is also survived by her sister Fon Boyd and husband Bobby and family, nieces LouAnn Buass and Cindy Moreland and families, and many other beloved relatives and lifelong friends. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Leslie B. Ward, Jr., her parents Norman and Joyce Lindsey, sister Joy Sanders and husband Johnny, and niece Gaye Lynn Sanders.Betty was born on February 27, 1928, in Carmona, Texas, and was raised in New Gulf, Texas. After graduating from Bolin High in 1945, Betty attended the University of Texas at Austin and received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1950. While at UT, Betty met her soul mate, Les Ward, while he was completing his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Betty and Les were married on August 27, 1949. Their tremendous love affair would span 64 years until Les' passing at age 87 in 2013.Betty went on to receive a Master of Education from UT in 1962. Her teaching career flourished while Les built a successful engineering firm. They built their dream home in West Lake Hills, where they created memories with family and friends for the next 50 years. Betty was most proud of, and found her greatest joy in, her granddaughters Karis and Micaiah. The addition of great-grandsons, Cash and Riley, brought a new level of joy for her, as their Memaw.Teaching was a true calling for Betty. She made a lifelong, positive impact on the young lives of those she taught - and she loved every minute of it. After she retired from teaching in 1983 from Eanes ISD, Betty received cards, letters and visits from former students throughout the years. She continued her commitment to the Westlake community through volunteering on the board for the Eanes History Center. She wrote a series of articles on the history of Eanes and greater Westlake area, published in the local newspaper.Betty and Les shared a great love for travel. While they were fortunate to have seen numerous countries around the world, they most cherished their times exploring the United States in their little camper, seeking out remote camp grounds and soaking in the beauty of this country and its many cultures. Betty was a tremendously social and outgoing person with a wonderful sense of humor. Her parties and family gatherings were legendary, and she was famous for her incredible cooking. Always both the teacher and student, Betty occupied much of her time at home reading, writing, keeping up with current news, enjoying her beloved tree-filled canyon and view of the Austin skyline, and of course spending time with Les, her family, and pets. Betty and Les' deep and abiding love will always stand as a testament of life well lived for their family.A private family gathering will take place at a later date. To honor Betty, donations may be made to Heart to Heart Hospice, Austin Pets Alive, and the Eanes Education Foundation. Betty's favorite Bible verse: Joshua 1:9, "Be strong, and of good courage, be not afraid, neither be worried, for the Lord your God is with you, wherever you go."
