Bessie StelbackPoughkeepsie - Bessie Stelback, 102, a lifelong area resident, passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family.She was born on June 23, 1914 in New Canaan, CT and was the daughter of the late Charles V. and Mary E. (Curran) Delaney. After moving to Poughkeepsie, she graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1934.Bessie worked for eight years as a bookkeeper for a local company prior to marrying the love of her life and best friend, Leslie Stelback, on June 14, 1942 at St. Mary's Church in Poughkeepsie. He predeceased her on March 22, 1997.She was responsible for home and family while Les fought for our country during World War II in the Pacific theater. They moved to Hyde Park after he was honorably discharged from the Army. She and her husband enjoyed playing golf, often meeting new friends and forming lasting friendships. She was a wonderful homemaker and fantastic cook. Bessie was an avid reader and a former member of the Hyde Park Senior's Club. She enjoyed bowling and playing bridge. She was a communicant of St. Peter's Parish in Poughkeepsie. Bessie was so proud to have earned her state driver's license at age 79.Her greatest joy was being with her family. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was adored by her family and was loved by all that knew her. She and her daughter Joan remained the closest friends and confidants throughout their lives. Bessie had a zest for life and warmth that gave all those in her company true happiness.Bessie is surived by her daughter, Joan Sammarco, and spouse, Val, of Hyde Park; two granddaughters (and their spouses): Sherry and Brian Moran, and Lori and Steven D'Amico; four great-grandchildren: Kaleigh and Abbey Moran, and Chase and Cole D'Amico; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to her husband, Bessie was predeceased by her brother, Charles Delaney, and her sister, Mildred Bloomer.Calling hours will be from 4-7pm on Thursday, May 18th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Route 9, Hyde Park.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Patrick Curley at 10am on Friday, May 19th at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peter's Parish, 185 Hudson View Drive, Poughkeepsie.
