Barbara ChaneyMadridBarbara A. Chaney, 73, died at Wesley Acres in Des Moines on May 20, 2017 after a courageous, dignified eight-month struggle with cancer.Barbara was born on September 18, 1943 in Des Moines to Benjamin and Merrenda (Sheldahl) Keyte. She was a 1961 Roosevelt graduate. She was a Drake-educated classical cellist who performed professionally and taught as a young woman. Barbara was an EEG technologist in northern Illinois. She was a real estate agent in Rockford, IL for the last thirty years. She proudly served her community as a member of the Winnebago County Board of Review for property tax assessments. Barbara was a lifelong devotee and supporter of the opera and classical music. She had a lively spirit, a warm heart, and a brilliant mind.She is survived by her son, Bill Chaney, of Madrid; grandchildren Rob, Ned, Ben, John, Joe, and Madeline; brother Chris (Beth) Keyte, of Des Moines; sister Susan Shore, of Eden Prairie, MN; and her ex-husband and friend Scott Chaney, of New Orleans, LA. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Paul, and brother-in-law Kerry Shore.Arrangements are by Soderstrum Funeral Home in Slater. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at the Iowa Arboretum near Madrid at noon on June 18th.
