(known as Granny and Grammy)

Barbara Agnes Jackson was born on March 11, 1938 in Baltimore, Maryland.  She entered eternal rest on Sunday morning, December 16th after a brief illness. Her parents were the late Joseph and Ruby Banks.  Barbara was the youngest of seven children. Siblings who predeceased her are (brothers) Donald Banks, Monroe Banks, Avon Banks, Reginald Banks and (sister) Carolyn Cole.

She completed her high school education at Douglas High School in 1956.  Upon her graduation, Barbara worked several small jobs and began working as a cashier at Giant Food, where she worked part-time and retired from after twenty-eight and ½ years of service. It is reported that she was the first African-American cashier at Giant Food in Baltimore.  Being employed at Giant Food, she made several lifelong friends and enjoyed visits from her frequent customers.

One of Barbara’s fondest memories during a recent interview with her granddaughter Treasure, was a Christmas gift from her mom which was a one pedal bike which quickly made her popular around the neighborhood.  She adored all children and as such had a special relationship with her oldest granddaughter Tania. She also proudly became a foster parent for more than seven years. Briefly, she enjoyed working as a daycare provider to children and they all adored her dearly.

Her hobbies included playing cards and frequent trips to the casino (Dover Downs) to be exact.  Barbara’s greatest joy was spending time with her daughters and her granddaughters while witnessing their many accomplishments.  She unselfishly gave of her time and always knew how to “rob Peter to pay Paul” in order to ensure that children and grands were taken care of.  She also enjoyed shopping on QVC and talking with her girlfriends on the phone daily.

Barbara will always be remembered for her infectious smile, many humorous sayings, and her everlasting love for her children and granddaughters.

Barbara shall be remembered with love by: (daughters) Tangia Maria Merchant (Frank), Tiffany Ann KInsler (Curtis) aka Curti to her.  Her daughters are from her union to Herman Jackson. Her pride and joy (granddaughters): Tania Jacobs, Treasure Kinsler, Tatyana Merchant, Trinity Kinsler, and Jasmine Sotubo, (sister) Mildred Winegan, (nieces) Sharron Dorsey and Sundae Kruse  (nephews) Donald Banks, Timothy Green and Michael Green, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, other relatives and several special friends.
