A Life Well Lived
Alphonse Porter was born December 6, 1948, in Cincinnati Ohio to the late John and Henrietta Porter. He took his final earthly flight peacefully on Monday, July 9th, 2018 at his home in Cincinnati.Â
He attended Courter Technical High School graduating in 1967. He was accepted into the Plumbers Apprenticeship program in the Fall of that 1967. Even though he attended the University of Cincinnati for several semesters, before he could finish he felt the call to be a Cincinnati Firefighter. In August 1973, he became a part of one the earliest cadet classes that was primarily composed of African American men. Growing up during those times, becoming a Fire Fighter was a hard and strenuous process. He not only became an excellent Fire Fighter, he also was a Paramedic during his time. Over the years, he excelled in his profession and exceeded all expectations of that early cadet class, rising through the ranks to become a Fire Lieutenant. He would retire after twenty-five years of service.Â
In 1973, he was united in holy matrimony to the late Shirley Ann Porter. To this union a son was born, Alphonse D. Porter Jr. Together, they stressed education and love of family to Alphonse, as well as his step-Daughter, Sharon.
He was always a servant to others, especially his friends and family. He was a coach for many years on his son's baseball team and helping his grandsons with their game on their visits from Georgia. In his later years, even while his own health was not the best, he signed on to be a Volunteer Organ Transporter, which is something he did for many years prior to his death.Â
He was a devoted Father, Grandfather, Brother and Uncle who will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He would do anything for anyone and though he did not say much, his actions were a true testament of his giving nature.Â
