Alma Mae Althauser, a long time resident of Seward, Alaska, and most recently Kittitas, Washington, passed away peacefully on Jan. 2, 2011 at the age of 90. She was born on Feb. 1, 1920 in Mayfield Washington, the first daughter of Jasper and Sadie Hummel. At the age of 2, she was adopted by Perry and 0llie Sherman and moved to Harmony near Mossyrock where she grew up. After graduating from Mossyrock High School in 1938, she moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington.She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Charles Andrew Althauser, her brother John Hummel, and her daughter, Betty Louise Erbes. She is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline O'Connor of Chewelah, WA and a son, Gordon Althauser of Ellensburg, WA, eight grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. Her working career consisted mostly of office secretarial and bookkeeping jobs and she always took great pride in her abilities with the written word. Her other interests included hunting and fishing with her husband and family, gathering mushrooms and other wild edibles, especially in Alaska. She also played the piano, sang and passed her love of music on to her children. She will always be remembered by those who knew and loved her as a hard and able worker, dedicated to doing her very best at whatever work was at hand.A memorial is planned for Friday, Jan. 14th at 1:00 p.m. at Steward and Williams Tribute Center in Ellensburg.
