Allan C. Miller, age 89, of Tawas died on June 29, 2012, in Aiken, S.C.He was born on Aug. 5, 1922, to the late Charles and Grace Miller (nee Carpenter). Allan graduated from Tawas Area Schools in 1940 and later earned his bachelor's and juris doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan.He was an attorney for Tawas City before being elected as the 23rd Circuit Court judge. Allan proudly succeeded Judge Dehnke who, 25 years earlier, had sentenced the man to life in prison who had murdered Allan's father, Sheriff Charles Miller. Allan served as 23rd Circuit Court judge for 20 years and then served as a federal administrative law judge. His career spanned more than 50 years and he officially retired at the age of 86. Allan was a member of the American Bar Association and he also ran for the state appeals and supreme courts.Allan was a life member of the Kiwanis Club and was a past local president and the Michigan Kiwanis governor in 1975. He was a member of the Tawas United Methodist Church and his hobbies included tennis and fishing. Allan is survived by his wife, Betty, who he married on Sept. 23, 1943, in Ann Arbor; and five children, Allan C. (Kate) Miller of Berkeley, Calif., Christopher (Peggy) Miller of Grand Rapids, Van Miller of Naples, Fla., Cliff (Rhonda) Miller of East Tawas and Liz (Michael) Lewis Hartz of Aiken, S.C. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Jessica, Wyatt, Teal, Amanda, Andrea, Eric, Jason, Clifford, Allan and Rhys; three great-grandchildren, Marlon, Allan and Paxton; and his brother, Ken (Delphine) Miller of Naples, Fla.In addition to his parents, Allan was preceded in death by his brother, Charlie Miller, and grandsons, Randy Miller and Clayton Miller.Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 5, 11 a.m., at Tawas United Methodist Church, with internment to follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Tawas City. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
