Lives of Love, Service, and Hard Work

We are heartbroken to announce the death of our father and brother, Alexander Joseph Sherrer and his beautiful wife, Jolene Joyce Sherrer. They passed away peacefully within a few days of one another in early March 2023, Alex at the age of 72 and Jolene at the age of 70, surrounded by family and friends in Jacksonville, Florida.

Jolene Joyce Sherrer (nee Ogles), was born to Joe Clyde Ogles and Joyce Luanne Fisk, in Ottumwa, Iowa on July 24, 1952. She had two brothers and a sister. Jolene loved dearly and was partly raised by her grandmother in Tennessee. Jolene had experience as a sous chef and an accountant. She enjoyed cooking and hospitality and so loved cooking and baking for family and friends. Jolene worked at the NCO Club in Portsmouth, Virginia, she was an avid reader, crossword puzzle player, and gamer. Jolene had an open mind and loved to learn new things. She was also competitive and liked to win any game she played, especially Scrabble, where she was rarely defeated. Most of all, Jolene was kind, gentle, and generous with her love and time. She held a special place in her heart for her son, Peter Sherrer, his family, and her niece, Tina Way.

Alexander Joseph Sherrer, was born to Alexander T. Sherrer and Connie Sherrer (nee Stankunas) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 8, 1950. Alex loved dearly and was raised by Carl Clauss Jr and Connie Clauss (nee Stankunas). He grew up in Jamison, Pennsylvania with his two brothers, Andrew Clauss and Carl Clauss III. After Alex graduated from Central Bucks High School, he joined the United States Navy where he served for four years. After a short break, Alex joined the United States Coast Guard where he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer after serving his country for 24 years as a Damage Controlman and Port Safety Officer.

Following his military career, Alex worked for the City of Atlantic Beach Florida as a Code Enforcer. Alex loved traveling when he was younger, and he had particularly fond memories of his time in the Mediterranean while serving in the Navy. It was during this time Alex developed a keen interest in Egyptian history and culture. He also loved model trains since childhood and has enjoyed collecting them over his lifetime. Over the years, he had two dogs he loved very much, Mr. Fitz, who he taught to turn on the trains and more recently Empress Josie.

Alex was hardworking, ethical, and had a strong sense of duty and family. He was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend.

Alex married Jolene Sherrer in 1986 and they lived all over the coastal United States when Alex was serving in the Coast Guard. Alex and Jolene are survived by five special grandchildren (Eowyn, Katie, Phillip, Marcus, and Rebecca), Alex’s beloved daughter, Alice Doverspike, Alex and Jolene’s beloved son, Peter Sherrer, their cherished daughter-in-law, Angela Sherrer, Alex’s treasured brothers Andy and Carl Clauss and their wives Lorrie and Carol respectively, Jolene’s beloved niece, Tina Way, and their dear friend and neighbor Phil Brabant.
