Alan (Al) Perkins, 71 of Waterloo, formally from Marshalltown died Monday May 11 at Mercy One Hospital in Waterloo due to complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Alan Lee Perkins was born December 20, 1948 in Marshalltown, Iowa as the eldest son to Lester and Shirley (Nelson) Perkins. He attended Marshalltown Highschool and graduated in 1967.

After Highschool Alan was drafted into the United States Army to serve during the Vietnam war. During his service he was stationed in Germany as a radio operator and colonel’s driver.  

In 1970 he was united in marriage to Sally Christensen. In their marriage one child, Kristine Kay was born.

Alan was united in marriage to Linda Ehrig in 1976. During this union one child was born, Michelle Renae. Alan and Linda were married for 29 years before later divorcing. During this time Alan was employed for 20 years at Glick Supply Co. When Glick Supply downsized, he then went on to Marshalltown Community College in the maintenance department and then lastly at The Embers before leaving Marshalltown.

Alan spent most of his time and had his favorite memories at the Iowa International Raceway Go-Kart track. Where he was known as Al “Boom Boom” Perkins, Last chance racing, #44. He also enjoyed racing stock cars and playing softball in his earlier years, along with fishing the Iowa River, and many rounds of golf.

He loved to discuss his golfing, big fish, and racing stories at Vaughn’s Pub with the regulars that you could find there any day of the week. Alan loved to dance and listen to music. He was always ready to crack a cold one and give advice to the younger racers to help get them on the track; as he never knew a stranger.

Left to remember him are his children Kristine (Chris) Husak, Michelle (Andrew Neuroth) Perkins; his grandchildren Evan, Madison, and Gavin Husak; Ryan and Leah Grobe. A brother Rick Perkins; sisters Cheryl Perkins Susie, Teri Perkins Frye, and half-sister Connie Loots. Uncles Don Nelson and Earl Nelson. Along with several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lester and Shirley Perkins, a brother Billy Perkins, many beloved uncles, aunts, cousins, and lastly numerous friends from his Vaughn’s Pub and Go-Kart Track days.
