Alan Glen StetlerVentura, CA Early Friday morning, May 27, 2016, at age 65 Alan Glen Stetler went home to the Lord after a short battle with a rare heart condition. Alan was born on March 29, 1951 in Ventura, California to Nadine and Donell Stetler. He was raised in Ventura and attended Buena High School where he was active in athletics as a football player. At age 18, Alan entered the United States Army where he completed basic training at Fort Ord before proudly serving in Vietnam and Germany. After serving overseas he returned home to Ventura to become a recruiter. While serving his country he held numerous jobs including being in mortar and helicopter units, but perhaps most notably he was a shooting instructor despite not being able to hit the broad side of a barn! After the Army, Alan began civilian life at USA Petrochem. He continued his career as a safety engineer with Texaco, Chevron-Texaco, and finally Venoco Inc. Alan inspired those around him and built an impressive career implementing safety regulations that extended to multiple fields statewide. He retired in 2014 after 40 years of making the oil and gas industry a safer place. The consummate outdoorsman, Alan was an avid hunter and fisherman. When he couldn't be in the forest or on the lake Alan would spend time on his bike or on his surfboard. He had too many other interests to list as he was always willing to try anything once. During his life Alan collected an impressive number of trophies that hang on the walls of his family homes to this day. A veritable jack of all trades, Alan was given the nickname "Mr. Home Improvement". The house and yard were under constant construction with each iteration resulting in a unique transformation. He never shied away from a new project, which was necessary for him to build his second home in Ennis, Montana of which he was endlessly proud. Faith was a central focus in Alan's life. He belonged to Bible Fellowship Church for 15 years and was an active member and leader of a small bible study group for the last 10 years. He prayed every morning as part of his routine and without a doubt he belonged to God. After losing the first love of his life, Terrie, Alan struggled to find his way. Finding his wife Kathy was a blessing to them both. To her, Alan was a prince. He swept Kathy off of her feet and carried her into a new depth of faith, a wonderful family, and a life full of adventures that would have been impossible without him. No one can deny that Alan was a master of personal interaction. Whether it was being a leader at work, being the life of the party, or just saying hello to literally everyone he passed on the street he always managed to make his presence felt. Alan worked and played hard and never seemed to finish a day without a little blood on him. He was a smooth talker, a smoother dancer, and couldn't have been more comfortable in his own skin. Alan was always willing to be the butt of the joke and gave as well as he took. He was a genuine man who couldn't help but let people know how he felt about them. Alan was tremendously proud of his children and even through his own hardships was concerned about them first. No one went anywhere with Alan Stetler without having an unforgettable time. Everyone loved him and he will be greatly missed. Alan was preceded in death by his first wife, Terrie, his father, Donell Stetler, his mother, Nadine Fouche, and his brother, Donnie Stetler. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy; son, Jason Stetler and his children Clay and Brooke; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Nicole Stetler, their children Bailey and Addyson; daughter and son-in-law, Kimi and Greg Jacobs, their child Travis; son, Ben; siblings, Linda Davis, Larry Stetler Zavolosieck, Sandy Hood and Kathy Fouche Knaus; as well as many other loving family members and countless friends. Services will be held at Bible Fellowship Church, 6950 Ralston Street, Ventura, CA 93003, on Saturday, June 4th, at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers or gifts to the family please feel free to make a donation to The Independence Fund, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, or Ducks Unlimited as these charity organizations were near and dear to Alan.
