Winifred Buono Atterbury died on November 19, 2016 in Woodcliff Lake, NJ where she resided for the last 18 months. She was 75. Daughter of the late Michael P. Buono and Mary Farris Buono, she was born on November 14, 1941. A proud Philadelphia native, Winnie was raised in Broomall, PA and lived in Newtown Square, PA for 40 years where she raised her three children. As a young girl, she spent her summers in Ocean City, NJ where she continued to vacation with her children and her brother and his family throughout her life. Winnie was the publisher and editor of Pennsylvania Nonprofit Report, a monthly newsletter for nonprofit agencies, public and private foundations and corporations in Pennsylvania. She was a leading authority on the nonprofit world in the state. Winnie began her career as style reporter at the Evening and Sunday Bulletin in the mid-1960s. She went on to work as a freelance journalist publishing articles in both local and national publications such as the New York Time, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Outdoor America, Motor Age, Focus and Philadelphia Magazine covering issues ranging from business and healthcare to the environment. She wrote frequently for the Mainline Magazine and served as the social editor for the weekly newspaper,Mainline Life. In 1992, she served as editor of A Pictorial History of Radnor. Winnie traveled extensively including a seven-week, 11,000 miles trip through the United states with her family in an RV. In her late forties, she completed two Outward Bound trips. She also traveled to The People’s Republic of China in early 1990s. She traveled through Western Europe and northern Africa. One of her favorite places in the world was St. Barth’s which she discovered before it became a chic beach resort. Winnie attended the Academy of Notre Dame in Villanova, PA and graduated in 1959. She graduated from Rosemont College in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. She was an advocate for single sex education for women and was an active alumna for both educational institutions. She is survived by her brother Michael and her three children Winnie Atterbury O’Keefe of Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, Christina A. Dever of New York City, NY and George Atterbury of Miami, FL. Winnie was the loving grandmother of seven grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday November 26, 11:00 AM at The Church of St. Monica, 63 Main Ave., Berwyn. Relatives and friends are invited to a Visitation at the Church from 9:30 to 10:50 AM. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Academy of Notre Dame (memo line: Mansion Restoration in memory of Winnie Atterbury ‘59) and mailed to Academy of Notre Dame, c/o Paige LeGrand, Director of Advancement, 560 Sproul Rd, Villanova, PA, 19085.
