KING, Sr., Wilton Wayt Age 79, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2016, of complications from pneumonia. He was born on August 11, 1937, in Richmond, Virginia, the son of W. Page King and Elisabeth K. King. He was a loving husband to his wife of 58 years, Kay Alderman King, and a devoted father to his children W. Wayt King, Jr., Barbara K. King, Stephen C. King (Roberta), and Carolyn K. Fisher (Clinton). He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren, to whom he was a doting Granddaddy. Wilton was a 1955 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Virginia, and went on to earn Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and Master of Mechanical Engineering degrees at the University of Virginia, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon social fraternity, the Raven Society, and the Tau Beta Pi and Phi Eta Sigma honorary fraternities and served on the UVA Honor Committee. He then earned his PhD in Engineering Mechanics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Wilton moved with Kay and their young family to Atlanta in 1964 to join the faculty of the Georgia Institute of Technology as Assistant Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics. He taught there for 28 years, ultimately becoming Associate Director of the Engineering Science and Mechanics department. He retired from Georgia Tech as an Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering and joined Bell Labs, where he worked for 10 years as a Member of Technical Staff and was issued several patents for fiber optic connectors. During his career, he co-authored three engineering textbooks on Statics and Dynamics. He was a lifelong advocate of the importance of education, and he instilled that value, along with the values of honesty and hard work, in his children and grandchildren. He was a principled, Christian man, and a member of Dunwoody United Methodist Church. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. A memorial service officiated by Rev. Dan Brown will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. in the sanctuary at Dunwoody United Methodist Church, with visitation immediately afterward in the church parlor.
