William (Bill) John Jeffery January 11, 1921 - December 31, 2016 William (Bill) John Jeffery completed his final battle and passed away peacefully, in the presence, hearts, and thoughts of family and the good people of his community, Eston, SK, on December 31, 2016. Bill was born on the family farm north of Plato, SK on January 11, 1921. He was third oldest of a family of eight children born to Roy and Bessie (Shaw) Jeffery. The family later moved to homestead land north of Eston, SK in the Prouse School District. He took most of his schooling at the one room Prouse school including correspondence in Grades 9 and 10.Bill enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in December 1940. He served overseas with the Air Force during World War II for about four years in England, France, Belgium, and Holland, ending up in northern Germany at the end of the war May 8, 1945. He was discharged from the Air Force in March of 1946. Bill was a long term member of the Eston Royal Canadian Legion always taking a role in the annual Remembrance Day service.Bill returned home to Eston to visit family and was asked to help out with the new Ford auto dealership at the Eston Co-op garage. Bill started there in May of 1946 and this began a nearly four decade career with the Eston Co-op. He assumed the Manager position in 1950 and retired at the end of 1985. Following his "retirement", Bill remained active in the insurance business.Bill was involved in leadership roles in his home community and province. He served on the Eston Town Council for 12 years. He also served the province of Saskatchewan as a presiding Justice of the Peace for 19 years and as a Coroner for 16 years. He retired from both of these roles when he was 71 years old.Bill was a competitive athlete and a lifelong sports fan. He played baseball and hockey and actively coached and officiated both of those sports in his community. In 1947 a very pretty nurse of Norwegian descent, Ruth Hukee, came to the Eston Hospital. She was a good skater and Bill met her at Sunday skating in the old steel rink. They were married August 1949 and enjoyed 56 years together. Sadly, Ruth passed away June 15, 2005. Bill was also predeceased by his parents Roy and Bessie; brothers Ronald, Frederick and Douglas; sisters Bernice Lenz and Phyllis Foy; brothers in law Jim Hay, Murray Foy, John Lenz, and Earl Pederson; sister in law Dorothy Jeffery; sons in law Patrick Turner and Peter Brook; and Ruth's brother and sister in law Raymond and Hazel Hukee.Bill is survived by his two sisters Marguerite Hay and Audrey Pederson; sisters in law Bert Jeffery and Peggy Jeffery; daughter Dianne Turner (grandkids Covey Turner, Camilla Turner-Steen (Todd Steen and great grandkids Gunnar and Haakon), and Lani Turner (Phil Bergbusch); daughter Bonnie Jeffery (grandkids Ayla Brook, and Lillith Brook (Andy Stewart and great grandkids Duncan, Cormac and Eliza); daughter Cathy Jeffery (Bernie Knorr and grandkids Andrew and Rosalind); and son Jim Jeffery (Andrea Jeffery and grandkids Jessica, Bill, and Vienna). He is also survived by his Eston "sons" - Dale Harpestad, Garnet Keeler, and Craig Dudley, and numerous friends and nieces, nephews, and cousins including Ruth's nieces and nephew (and their families), Lorraine, Rae Lynn, Roberta and Ed.Bill's final resting place will be with his wife, Ruth, in the Eston Cemetery. At Bill's request a public graveside service with the Legion in attendance, directed by Eston Legion Padre Jim McNaughton and Legion Sergeant at Arms Dale Harpestad, will be held after seeding in June 2017. Anyone wishing to do so may make a donation in Bill's memory to Eston Legion Branch #155 (make cheques payable to Eston legion Branch #155 and mail to Eston Legion, Box 664, Eston, SK S0L 1A0). The family extends thanks to the health care providers in Eston for giving such great and loving care to Dad when he most needed it.
