Virgil EckartCAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. - Virgil Eckart, 90, of Cambridge City, died on Tuesday July 19, 2011, at Arbor Trace in Richmond. He was born on Sept. 17, 1920, in Richmond, Ky., to Martin and Marie (Payne) Eckart. Virgil moved to Cambridge City in 1929 and in his early years was like "Tom Sawyer,' hunting and trapping, then selling the pelts to make money. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940 and won the award for athleticism, starring in basketball, track and baseball. During those years, he worked at Miller Dairy delivering ice and dairy products door to door.After high school, Virgil went to work as a machinist for Bertsch & Co. until enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1943 as a railroad quartermaster. Following the Normandy invasion, he became an infantryman and spent the remainder of the war fighting in France and Germany. Upon returning from the war, he went back to work at Bertsch & Co. until 1967, then he worked at Visteon until he retired in 1985. Virgil served on the town board as police commissioner in the late '50's. He was a founding member of Lawrence H. Bertsch American Legion Post 169 and help construct the current post building and he also was a life member of over 50 years at Cambridge Lodge 5 F&AM. Last year he celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends at the Golay Center. Survivors include two sons, Douglas (Carla) Eckart of Columbus, Ind., and James (Jeannie) Eckart of Fort Worth, Texas; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Eckart of Tucson, Ariz., Jason Eckart of Silverthorne, Colo., Scott (Emma) Eckart of New Orleans, La., and Lory (life partner Kathleen Love) Eckart-Love of Seattle, Wash.; two great-granddaughters, Brooke and Drew Eckart-Love; several nieces and nephews.Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Marjorie Roettger Eckart, whom he married on Jan. 31, 1942; and a brother, J.W. Eckart; and a sister, Beulah Mae Eckart.Friends may call at Waskom Capitol Hill Chapel in Cambridge City on Saturday, July 23, 2011, from 10 a.m. until the start of the services at noon. Rev.
