Verlee (Lee) Eloise Bowey, 88, a long time resident of Sterling, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 30, 2016. A memorial service will be held 10:00 am, Saturday, December 10 at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with Rev. John Roberts officiating. Service will conclude at the funeral home. Lee was born on December 11, 1927 to Alexander and Grace (Shull) Fiebig. She graduated from Atwood High School and attended the University of Colorado-Boulder on a scholarship. During World War II, Lee worked for the Federal Farm Association documenting the prisoners of war working crews who were sent to Sterling to work sugar beets. Lee often said this was the most interesting job she ever had. Lee married John W. Bowey on December 8, 1946 in Atwood, Colorado. They had four boys that they raised in Sterling. They were married 31 years before his death in 1978. She was a bookkeeper for American Fertilizer and Chemical Company and a customer service representative for Commercial Bank of Sterling. She also had a private catering business. Lee was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for over 50 years and was a long-time active member of the Logan County Historical Society. She volunteered for several years at the Visitors Center and liked to visit with the people traveling through. She enjoyed attending church activities at both the Presbyterian and Methodist churches. She loved watching all four boys play a variety of sports and continued that love watching her grandchildren participate in sports and other school events. Lee was a dedicated Rockies and Broncos fan and rarely missed watching a game on TV. She was an avid bridge player, playing in several bridge clubs for many years, and taught most of her grandchildren to play poker at a very tender age. Lee was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, and her sister Verda Worthley. She is survived by; son Jack and wife Mona and grandchildren Jessica and Nikki Bowey, Hannah (Corey) Thorp, Lacy (Dustin) Zwirn, and Cody (Rebeka) Mathewson; son Jay and grandson Jason (Courtney) Bowey; son Jim and wife Ronda and grandchildren Logan, Taylor and Alexandra Bowey; son Jeff and wife Tami and grandchildren Desiree Padilla and Nicole Garcia, and 10 great-grandchildren.
