Vanesse "Peggy" Gibbs1911 ~ 2015Vanesse "Peggy" Gibbs, 104, died Wednesday, November 18, 2015 in Boise.Peggy was born on October 10, 1911 in Meadville, Missouri to Alpha and Tom Lightner. Her early years included helping out on the family farm and riding her pony to a one-room school. At an early age, she became the center of attention at social events by singing and playing the piano. Hence she was nicknamed Peggy for a popular song she sang called Peggy O'Neill.Peggy married Ralph Gibbs in 1932. Together they owned and operated a barber and beauty shop in St. Joseph, Missouri for 40 years. They raised two sons and a daughter. While the children were young, the family traveled extensively by car throughout the United States.As a widow at 73, Peggy moved to Boise and helped her daughter and son-in-law raise their two children. While in Boise she extended her travels to Europe, Central America, and the South Pacific. Having mastered many skills and crafts throughout her life, Peggy started an alterations business that she maintained until over 100 years of age. Her joys in life included all social activities and a good game of pinochle. She had many dear friends and the delightful companionship of her beaus, Fred Audette, Earl Smith, and John Bachman. In the final year of her life, Peggy moved to Grace Assisted Living on State Street in Boise where she expanded her circle of friends.Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ralph Gibbs. She is survived by sons, Terry Gibbs of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Randall Gibbs of Saugus, California; one daughter, Glenda King of Boise; eight grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.The family wishes to extend their appreciation for the devotion and love she received from the staff at Grace Assisted Living and the wonderful care she received from St. Luke's Hospice of Boise.Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm, Sunday, November 22, 2015 in the Cana Chapel at Cathedral of the Rockies in Boise.Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on Peggy's memorial webpage at www.summersfuneral.com.
