PLYMOUTH — Thomas J. Abberger, 94 years old, a resident of Plymouth, IN since 2006, passed away at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2015 at his home. Mr. Abberger was born on April 21, 1921 in Mishawaka, IN to the late John J. and Elizabeth Vera (Sipotz) Abberger. He has lived most of his life in South Bend, IN and after retiring, lived in Angola, on the lake where he enjoyed fishing. On August 29, 1953 in Mishawaka, Thomas was united in marriage to Joanne Harrison. Along with his loving wife of 62 years, Joanne, Thomas is survived by one daughter, Sue Ann "Susie" (Mark) Redmond of Fremont, IN, and their children, Ryan (Raquel) Workman, Samantha Workman, Kyle (Abigail) Workman, and Chad Workman; son, Zane (Eileen) Abberger of Lakeview, MI, and their children, David (Danisse) Abberger and Carrie (Scott) Thomas; son, Thomas D. (Lisa) Abberger of Plymouth, IN and their children, Jenna Abberger and Shane Abberger; daughter-in-law, Ginger Abberger of Memphis, TN and her children, Amy (Dean) Running, Michael (Heather) Abberger, and Matthew (Libby) Abberger; and seventeen great grandchildren. Mr. Abberger was preceded in death by his son, Joel Abberger; sister, Marty Daly; and brother, John Abberger. Mr. Abberger proudly served his country during
WWII with the United States Air Corp. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Plymouth, IN. Mr. Abberger worked as an Engineer with Bendix Aviation for twenty years and South Bend Public Works Department for fifteen years. He enjoyed fishing and R.C. planes. After Mr. Abberger retired, he was presented with a Key to the City of South Bend. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Military honors will follow. Friends may visit with the family one-hour prior to services on Saturday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at a later date at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.
