STEVE CHERKASSteve Cherkas, late of Regina, passed away in the presence of family, after a short but courageous battle with illness, on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at the age of 74 years. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Katherine; brothers, Peter (in infancy), John, and Nick; and sister-in-law Lillian. Steve is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Phyllis; sons, Tim (Tawny) and Greg (Kim); daughter Corridawne (Kevin); brother Paul; cousin Peter (Lydia); grandchildren, Austin, Steven, and Grayson, Kelsea, Kylan and Kelden; and great-granddaughter Jocelyn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Steve was born on March 18, 1943 and grew up on the farm. He was employed as a school bus driver while he attended, then graduated high school in Kamsack, SK. Steve loved working with wood and this directed him to college courses that contributed to his knowledge and skill in the lumber trade, leading him to a 47 year career. On October 8, 1966 Steve married the love of his life, Phyllis Matechuk. Early years were spent in Kamsack and in 1967, 1968, and 1970, they had their three children. In 1972, they moved to Moose Jaw into a home built by Steve, where they lived for 17 years. His work required re- location to Regina in 1989, where they have resided together since. In addition to building, fixing, and creating with wood, Steve enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, and playing cards. He loved to watch hockey, curling, and football. Steve especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and watching them participate in their sports, theatre, and dancing events. He was also a huge advocate and volunteer for Saskatchewan Special Olympics for over 25 years. Memorial Service to celebrate Steve's life will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue Regina, SK on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be held at a later date.
