Stephen Zinanti, at the age 100, passed away peacefully at his home in Denver, Colorado on September 9, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Zinanti is survived by his five children: Mary Jo Dampier, Myra Stroup, Ray Zinanti, Steve Zinanti II, and Stuart Zinanti. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many others who have adopted him as a father and grandpa.

Steve is a veteran of World War II, where he honorably served on the frontline in the European theater. He was born in Crested Butte, Colorado to Joseph and Mary Zinanti on May 31, 1917. He was the eldest of nine siblings. As a child, he developed his love for nature by exploring the beautiful mountains and lakes with his brothers. At the age of 10, Steve moved with his family to Tioga, CO where he later mined coal for CF&I steel to help his family after the Great Depression.

In June of 1942, Steve and three of his brothers where drafted to fight in WWII. Steve was a corporal in the 987th Field Artillery Battalion where he served in many famous battles. Steve fought for his country on D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Hurtgen Forest, and many more. All four brothers survived the war and returned home to Colorado.

After returning home, Steve met his beautiful wife, Betty in Walsenburg, CO and they were married in July of 1946. Steve then attended college at Adams State where he received his degree in Education. He later went on to receive his Master’s Degree at Denver University. Steve taught for the Denver Public School system for over 30 years where he was loved by all students and colleagues. Steve and his wife were also foster parents for over 20 years and provided many children a loving home.

Although Steve had many accomplishments and a life full of adventure, he was most well-known for his big heart. Words cannot begin to capture this man’s unconditional love and compassion. If you were fortunate enough to know Steve, you know how his love could make you feel like you were the most important person in the world.

For over a century, Steve has blessed this world with his presence. We will always carry his memory in our hearts.

Services will be held Sunday, September 17th at 12:00pm at 1530 South Meade Street Denver, CO. Steve’s ashes will be joined with his wife’s in a family urn. Immediately following, there will be a celebration of life to honor Steve.
