Sonya Maria Montoya, 34, passed away suddenly at her home in Encinal on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014.She was born on Dec. 9, 1979, in Grants to the late Jose Herminio Montoya and Elizabeth Padilla-Montoya.A lifelong Catholic, she was a member of St. Gertrude's Church in Mora.She was preceded in death by her father, Herminio Montoya; paternal-grandparents, Ambrosio and Celina Montoya; maternal-grandfather, Agustin J. Padilla; brothers-in-law, Ronnie Gandert and Rodney Cordova; and maternal-great-grandmother, Lila Lovato.She is survived by her loving mother, Elizabeth K. Montoya; sisters, Victoria Montoya (Jose Lito) of Mora, and Isla-Jo Montoya-Cordova; brother, Joshua Gandert and fiancée Marchelle; niece, Dakodah Lee Gandert, all of Encinal; nephew, Herminio Espinoza of Mora; and maternal-grandmother, Rosie Padilla. Sonya also leaves behind a very close friend, Danielle "Lee" Evans of Kentucky; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends, all of whom she loved dearly. Sonya did not live a long life but she lived a full life. She loved casinos, gambling, bingo, and jewelry. Her interests included cars, embroidery, music, and camping with her family. Her pride and joy were her nephews and niece. She loved spending time with them and didn't mind spending her last dime on them. Sonya was giving and loving and she never complained about anything. Her witty banter will be missed greatly. Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Gertrude's Church in Mora. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Gertrude's Church with Father Paul Grala as celebrant. Interment will follow at The Montoya Family Cemetery in Encinal. Serving as casket bearers will be Michael Marrujo, John Edward Sanchez, Joshua Romero, Andrew Padilla, Lawrence Padilla, Dean Martinez, Ernest Romero and George Asi.
