Shirley HenricksenSeptember 15, 1912 - April 19, 2015Shirley Later Garvin Henricksen, age 102, passed away peacefully in Pocatello Idaho on April 19, 2015.Shirley was born on September 15, 1912 in Rigby, Idaho. She was eldest of four children born to Lawrence Ray Later and Mabel Emily Cordon Later. At the time of her birth, Rigby was a part of Fremont County. She was born in a house diagonally across the street from her grandparents' home. Shirley got her name from a character in the book, "The Lion and the Mouse". The heroine in this book was named Shirley and her mother liked the name.When Shirley was a young child, the family moved to California for a time due the ill health of Shirley's younger brother. When her brother passed away at age two, the family returned to the Rigby area. Times were hard so the family moved back to California in 1920 so that her father could obtain work as a carpenter. They resided there until Shirley was twelve at which time they moved back to Idaho so that her father could pursue his love of farming. The family worked hard to make a go of the farm but it became necessary to return to California for a time to obtain work. Shirley attended junior high and high school in California and Idaho, graduating from Rigby High School in 1929 at the age of 16.After graduation, Shirley returned to California to attend Willis Business College. Following her graduation from the business college, she returned to Idaho. She obtained employment in Idaho Falls where she worked at various positions as a secretary, receptionist and legal clerk. Much of her time away from her day job was spent helping out on the farm east of Rigby.In 1935, Shirley moved to Pocatello for a new job with the W.P.A. During this time she was active in music and theater and played the lead in a musical entitled "The Golden Imp." While living in Pocatello, Shirley met Joseph Garvin. They began to date and were married on August 13, 1938. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple. In 1939, they purchased a 3/4 acre plot on Grace Drive in Pocatello. They built a home there where they resided and raised their family. The lot included a large garden and orchard which provided produce for the family for many years. In 2002, she moved to Chubbuck to be near family. She was residing in Chubbuck at the time of her passing.Joe and Shirley were the parents of three sons, Paul, Philip (Skip) and Michael. Joe passed away in 1977. She married Raymond Henricksen on February 14, 1985. He passed away in 1990Shirley was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She remained active in the church in her later years until November of 2014 when her health prevented her from attending as often as she would have liked.Shirley loved music, singing, dancing, and the out-of-doors. She was involved in a number of singing groups, including the Sweet Adeline's, throughout her life. She and Joe also belonged to a square dance group. The family also enjoyed many happy times camping in the beautiful mountains of Idaho, a tradition she continued well into her 90's. Motorcycling on her three-wheeler was often a part of these outings as well as singing around the campfire. Shirley also enjoyed the family hobby of hunting for Indian artifacts, a hobby she and Joe enjoyed for many years. Shirley was an avid reader and also enjoyed crossword, jigsaw, and other puzzles as well as needlework. She was active in contest clubs for a number of years and won many prizes including appliances, motorcycles and a college scholarship for her son Paul.Later in her life, Shirley was an active participant in the events at the senior center in Pocatello. It was there that she made many friends and enjoyed a variety of activities. While at the center she participated in the Senior Olympics where she won several medals in pinochle. Her last trip to the center was just a few months prior to her passing.Shirley is survived by her three sons, Paul (Ellen) Willard, Utah, Skip (Karen) Pocatello, and Michael (Debby) Chubbuck; a Sister, Donna Johnston, who resides in Awatuke AZ; 13 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joe, her husband, Ray, a brother, Calvin and a brother, Wendell.Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Chubbuck 3rd Ward, 4773 Independence Ave. Chubbuck, ID 83202 with a viewing for one hour prior to services at the church.
