Shirley F. Thornton passed away on October 11, 2016 in Los Angeles, CA. She was born on May 30,1930 in Baltimore, MD the sixth of ten children born to Helen J. and George J. Fowlkes,Sr. Shirley Thornton married John V. Thornton on October 11, 1952. From this union Jewelle V. Thornton was born. She retired after a 40 year career at the Social Security Administration and subsequently volunteered and managed the gift shop at Provident Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Shirley Thornton was actively involved in the Naomi Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Meals on Wheels and International Toastmistress Club. A memorial celebration will be held at New Shiloh Baptist Church 2100 N. Monroe St., Balto, MD 21217 on November 4, 2016 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to The Carter School of Music 2100 North Monroe Street, Baltimore, MD 21217 and/or Penn North Kids Safe Zone 1622 North Carey Street, Baltimore, MD 21217.
