Shirley Ann Pike, 84, of Battle Creek, and formerly of East Tawas and Fenton, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Battle Creek.Shirley was born on Nov. 23, 1926 to Waino and Ann (Lustila) Liedes in Waukegan, Ill. She graduated in 1944 from Waukegan High School and attended the University of Michigan.Shirley often visited her grandparents in Hancock, where she met and later married Marvin D. Pike on Dec. 21, 1946. Their happy 62 year marriage began in Hancock, and later they moved to the Detroit area. In 1960, they moved to Fenton where Marvin opened his own civil engineering practice. In addition to being a stay-at-home mom to their four children, Shirley worked as the bookkeeper and secretary for Pike Engineering Co. Staying true to her Finnish Lutheran upbringing, she also dedicated many hours as a volunteer secretary/assistant for her church, Transfiguration Lutheran in Fenton. After their retirement to East Tawas in 1981, Shirley remained active as a hospital volunteer for St. Joseph Health System in Tawas City for many years. They relocated to Battle Creek in 2003.Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Waino and Ann Liedes; and her husband, Marvin. She is survived by her four children, Carole Grimley of Battle Creek, Gary (Cindy) Pike of Plainfield, Ill., Marcia (Roger) Huff of Holland, Mich. and Brian Pike and fiancé Dawn Hosang of Oxford; her brother, Gerald Lustila of Melvindale,; her aunt Catherine Nickerson; eight grandchildren: Jaime (Chris) Parent, Erin (Stephen) Blabac, Dana Grimley, Shannon (Andrew) Hietschold, Michelle Pike, Craig Kupchick, Tyler Kupchick, and Alison Huff; her great grandson, Miles Christopher Parent; and numerous nieces and nephews.A memorial service to celebrate Shirley's life will be Friday, Oct. 7 at 2:30 p.m. at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Shirley and her years of volunteer service to the St. Joseph Health System in Tawas City at www.sjhsysfoundation.org/memorial.htm.
