Shirley A. Johnson Obituary

Feb 05, 1930 - Oct 05, 2009

This obituary is administered by:
Shirley A. Johnson passed away on Monday October 5, 2009 in Yuma. She was born on February 5, 1930 in Wakefield, Michigan. Shirley had a vibrant outlook on life and was tireless in her support of family and friends. Despite her diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis at an early age, she was a strong and energetic woman. Shirley held tightly to the conservative values she acquired growing up in Michigan. She cherished her family and did what she could to look after others. She was a critical influence in the education and development of her grandchildren, and she applied her experience and energy to help others when ever possible. Later in her years, Shirley could be found with friends at The Crossing State Park demonstrating the fine arts of weaving and spinning to the park visitors. It was another way she gave back to the community. When she and her husband were victimized by thieves, she took time to get involved in the criminal trial making sure that punishments were just. Even advocating for one of the offenders when it appeared the sentence may be too harsh. Later, she worked with a victims advocacy group that is focused on helping others through the legal process. When asked to help prevent crime, Shirley agreed to talk with prison inmates helping them understand the trauma and emotional impact of their crimes on their victims, always hopeful that she was helping prevent the suffering of others. When it became apparent that her work with the prison was helpful, she expanded her efforts by agreeing to teach inmates to quilt. Despite a lagging economy Shirley was steadfast in the financial support of her favorite charities which included The Crossroads Mission and The Disabled American Veterans. Shirley was a remarkable woman who earned the love, trust and respect of her family and friends. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 60 years Robert Johnson Sr.; devoted children, Robert Johnson Jr. and Kathy Rosendale; grandchildren Kari Schindler, Allen Johnson and Anna Johnson; grandson Zachery Schindler and many other family and friends who will be forever grateful that her life touched theirs. There is no doubt Shirley will rest in peace content in the knowledge that her values will be passed down to future family generations and that her life has improved the lives of so many others. She will be missed. In keeping with her wishes, there will be no memorial services. If you wish to celebrate her life, please make a contribution in Shirley's name to one of her favorite charities.
