Roy Allen Bumpers, 72, passed away Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, at a River Oaks care center. Funeral: 6 p.m. Thursday in Biggers Funeral Chapel, 6100 Azle Ave., Fort Worth. Interment: 10 a.m. Friday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project. Mr. Bumpers, a retired
U.S. Air Force master sergeant/first sergeant and retired Air Force civil servant, was born on Nov. 9, 1944, in Wichita Falls. Roy enlisted in 1967 and served both as a USAF uniformed member and USAF civilian for a combined 44 years service in the defense of our great nation. He was a foreign war veteran serving two tours in Vietnam and one tour in Southwest Asia during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Roy was a consummate mentor developing hundreds of young airmen and he thrived in witnessing their career successes go far beyond his own. Although retired, Roy continued to offer his selfless guidance and counsel helping others succeed up until the very end of his distinguished life. Roy loved all things equestrian. A lifetime National Finals Rodeo member, Roy devoted countless hours supporting the annual Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. He was also an avid golfer and part-time emergency medical technician. Mr. Bumpers was preceded in death by his parents, Clark and Merita Groves Bumpers; his brother, Bobby Bumpers; his wife, Myra Lawhon Bumpers; his wife, Rita Ice Bumpers; and one daughter, Laurel Metts. Survivors: He is survived by his daughter, Linda Carter and husband, Barry, of Sulphur, Okla.; son-in-law, Nathan Metts; granddaughters, Abigail and Sarah; grandson, William; life partner, Edie Farrell; life friend, James Cato; and numerous other relatives and close personal friends.
