R O S E V E R O N I C A (S p o r c i c h) G A V A L I R Rose passed away in Kirkland, Washington on Tuesday, January 29, 2008, where she was receiving care from her daughter and son. Rose was born on February 12, 1917 in Helena Montana to Andrew and Veronica (Kvaternik) Sporcich. The second of four children, her family moved to Ronald Washington in 1922 where she attended Ronald Elementary School and Cle Elum High School. In addition to caring for her father and siblings after the early death of her mother, Rose worked for the Company Store in Ronald and later in Cle Elum. In November 1948, she married Cecil (Cy) Gavalir of Cle Elum where they enjoyed their loving life together until his passing in November 1973. She was the mother of their two children Cece and John and actively participated in their school, church, Boy Scouts, and Campfire Girls activities. Rose was a very sociable person. She enjoyed people from all heritages and walks of life and initiated conversation with anyone welcoming her to do so. So befitting of her personality and skills, she returned to retail where she worked at Crutcher's Men's Store from 1974-1979. She continued to enjoy all her hobbies – drawing, sewing, crochet, crafts, restoring dolls, gardening, music and reading. Along with her hobbies, she cherished spending time with good friends. Later in life, she attended most all of the local schools' plays and sporting events, supporting her friends' grandchildren. If there was a Senior Citizen's trip to take, she went without hesitation. She enjoyed her church community, the upper county township of friends and acquaintances, celebrated with joy all holidays and opportunities to attend parades, picnics, and gatherings, whether planned or spontaneous. Most of all, she loved her two children and they adored her. Rose was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved Cy, her brothers Andrew (Andy) and William (Bill) Sporcich and her sister Helen Swanson. She is survived by her daughter Cecile (Cece) Haw, her son John, her sister-in-law Ann (Schwab) Sporcich, and three nephews and their families. She was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union of America, the Ladies VFW Auxiliary, the Roslyn-Ronald-Cle Elum Heritage Club and a long-time member / charter contributor of the Ellis Island Foundation. There will be a time of visitation at Cascade Funeral Home in Cle Elum on Thursday, February 7, 2008 starting at noon to 7pm when the Recitation of the Rosary will begin at Cascade Funeral Home.
