Rev. Robert M. StevensThe Rev. Robert M. Stevens (Fr. Bob), age 64 of Juneau, died on Thursday, August 11th, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage after suffering severe respiratory arrest in his home the night before. He was born on June 16, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Matt and Mary Malerich Starsinich. He graduated from Detroit Riverdale High School in 1965, attended the University of Michigan for two years and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Bob and Penny, moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1970 where they were married two months later. He worked full-time as an Asst. Manager for Safeway while also being a full time student at the University of Puget Sound. He graduated in 1975 with a Masters Degree in European History. During their time in Tacoma Bob also taught night classes at Fort Steilacoom Community College for six semesters. He loved the great outdoors and all it had to offer which eventually brought the family to Alaska in 1982 to manage Tatsuda's Supermarket in Ketchikan. In 1989 he went to work for Northern Sales Co. in Ketchikan. In 1997 the family moved to Juneau where he managed the Juneau Branch of Northern Sales for thirteen years. This past April he took a position with JAMHI as a residential counselor. Fr. Bob had a 40 year involvement in the Episcopal Church. He attended Vancouver School of Theology in Vancouver B.C. and in 2005 he was ordained into the priest-hood in the Episcopal Church by Alaska Bishop Mark McDonald. He enjoyed being a priest and loved serving as rector at St. Brendan's Episcopal Church in Juneau from late 2005 up till his death. He especially embraced the pastoral side of the ministry. In 2005, seeing a need in the Valley, he started St. Brendan's Galley, a weekly community meal every Thursday night at the church. He loved seeing new faces ever week. Over the past six years it has grown into a wonderful family gathering place for people throughout the community and a major outreach ministry for St. Brendan's. He served on numerous committees and was currently serving as President of the Diocesan Standing Committee. His faith and love of God was the major part of his being and he cherished the love, fellowship and support of his church family, the ACTS community, as well as the Ecumenical community. He was very active in the Men's ACTS retreats, along with Word and prison retreats and found them all to be life changing experiences. Bob's love for his family was unconditional and had no limits. He had a great sense of humor, and tried to make each day count. He is survived by his wife Penny of 41 years; son Scott and his fiancé Patricia, of Adair, OK; son Jeremy and his wife Brandy, of Anchorage; four grandchildren: Justin, Dylan, Destiny, September, one great grand- daughter, Kavin, and his two sisters Marilyn Hutchison and Carol Zampa.Fr. Bob had a loving and compassionate heart and will be greatly missed by his family, St. Brendan's, and friends.
