Robert Donald Smith, Sr., 79Robert Donald Smith, Sr., age 79, of Attica, IN was called home and went to be with the Lord at 10:56 a.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. Robert was born on May 23, 1934 in Chicago, IL. He was the son of Frank and Leona (Shaw) Smith. He attended Chicago schools and later received his Associate Degree in Accounting from Ivy Tech College. He married Margaret L. James on May 20, 1956 and she survives. He served in the US Army during the
Korean War and Vietnam Conflict receiving a commendation medal and numerous other medals. He continued working in the security agency of the Army retiring in 1975. He then worked for the US Postal Office in Lafayette until 1999 where he was affectionately known as RD. Robert was actively involved in the Attica Free Methodist Church and was a volunteer at the ASK Program and Celebrate Recovery. He was a member of the Ham Operator Club and his handle was WB9VAL and also a member of the
VFW Post #1154 Lafayette.Surviving with his wife, Margaret, are 8 children, Robert Donald Smith, Jr. (wife: Betty) of Lafayette, IN, Peggy Sue Fry (husband: Robert) of Rossville, IN, Lois Smith of Lafayette, IN, Jill Corbin of Otterbein, IN, Dolly Speer (husband: Ricky) of Delphi, IN, James Smith of Fowler, IN, Carol Ellis (husband: James) of Mesa, AZ, and Amy Sharp (husband: William) of Attica, IN, 1 brother, William Nangle (wife: Ruth) of Lafayette, IN, 25 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren Robert was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, John Nagle, Betty Josephine Taylor, and Evelyn BenJamin.Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be at the Attica Free Methodist Church on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jerry Badgley officiating.
