Robert C. Smith, 90, formerly of Antietam Drive in Waynesboro, died peacefully at Quincy Home on November 28, 2016. He was born on March 11, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA to Clarence C. and Anna W. (Rogler) Smith. Robert moved to Waynesboro, PA in 1937, when his father accepted a position with Frick Company. A 1945 graduate of Waynesboro High School, Robert enlisted in the US Army Air Force in 1944 and served as a tail gunner and later as an engineer on B-24 and B-26 bombers. He served in the European Theater of Operation during World War II and participated in the liberation of Linz, Austria. Having attained the rank of corporal, he was discharged in 1946.Robert married Mary Jane "Nan" Middleton on November 25, 1950 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Waynesboro, PA. They were married 59 years, until Nan's death in March 2009. Robert worked for Blue Ridge Fruit Exchange and Miller Chemical. Robert retired from AMP Incorporated in May 1991. During the years ensuing his retirement, Robert served as a crossing guard and for 11 years as a crier for Judge Herman in the 39th Court of Common Pleas in Chambersburg. Throughout his life, he was known for his easy-going personality and his ability to remain optimistic in almost every situation.An active member of the community, Robert was a 69-year member of Acacia Lodge, #586 and various other Masonic bodies. He also belonged to the Waynesboro Country Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #695, American Legion Post #15 the Conococheague Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, BPO Elks #721, the Southern Engineering Society in Hagerstown, MD, and enjoyed fishing with friends and his grandchildren at the Waynesboro Fish and Game Association. Robert was active in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, serving as a member of the vestry, church treasurer, junior and senior warden, and as church school superintendent. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two sisters: Ruth, who died as a child and Mary Ann of Westminster, MD. Robert is survived by one daughter, Teresa Reichard, her husband, Gerald, and two grandsons: Chad and Brett Reichard, all of Waynesboro. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, December 2, 2016, in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 112 E. Second Street, Waynesboro, with Rev. Linda Watkins officiating. A Masonic Funeral will be held by the members of Acacia Lodge #586 just prior to the religious service at 11 A.M., Friday, in the church. Burial will be held at 1:30 P.M., Friday, in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro where military honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599, Chambersburg and the public is welcome to attend. The family will receive friends following the service in the church.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 112 E.
