1947 ~ 2016Robert Arthur Mathis passed away November 27, 2016 at his home in Heber City, Utah.He was born on June 23, 1947 in Price, Utah. He was the first child of Wallace and Gladys Mathis. A sister Katherine and a brother Scott were to follow. He was raised as a child of ranch responsibility, 4H animals, wide open spaces and he developed a love for the desert rocks and precious water.He graduated from Carbon High School and attended the College of Eastern Utah before he served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the Central British Mission under President George I Cannon. He remained friends with his companions to this day, over 5O years.Robert graduated from the University of Utah with a BS degree and later completed a Masters Degree of Public Administration at Brigham Young University.In December of 1971, he married Barbara Lighthall in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised three children Jason Robert (Marie), MaryAnn (Marcly) Cineus and Brian (Camille) Lighthall. Robert and Barbara began their family life in Midway, Utah. Robert served as the Wasatch County Planner for thirty years and post retirement for Midway City. He served on many committees throughout his career, including sewer and water boards, both local and statewide. He was active and participated in the development of Jordanelle Dam, Wasatch Sewer District, public zoning ordinances, Deer Creek State Park and Soldier Hollow. He assisted with the development of Deer Valley Ski Resort where he hiked, skied and helicoptered along the trails to protect the vegetation and water sources. Robert spent three years as the Olympic Coordinator for Wasatch County. Many days and nights were spent hosting and assisting teams and athletes and the volunteers to have a remarkable experience for cross country skiing and biathlon events for Soldier Hollow.Not only did Robert serve in many capacities in the community of Midway and Heber City but he also fulfilled many positions in the LDS church, his most beloved calling was as a Home Teacher to families that he loved.Survived by his wife of forty four years Barbara, children Jason, Brian and MaryAnn. Grandchildren Bradly, Phoebie, London, Thomas Robert, Ashton, Kaitlynn, Alan, Evalynn and Zahara. Brother Scott (Donna) Mathis and sister Katherine (Art) Reid.Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at the Midway LDS Stake Center (165 N. Center St., Midway, UT). There will be a viewing on Friday, December 2, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. and also from 11:30am-12:30 p.m. the day of the service both at the Midway LDS Stake Center. Condolences may be shared online at
