Ray Henry SCHILLER Obituary

Dec 01, 2016 - Jan 26, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
SCHILLER, Ray HenryRay Henry Schiller was born on Dec. 13, 1925 in Structure, Texas to Henry and Olga (Gustafson) Schiller. He passed away at home on Nov.26, 2016 in Austin, Texas in his own bed as he wished. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, brother Edwin, sister Metha, great-granddaughter Avery Elizabeth (in 2013) along with brothers and sisters in-law, nieces and nephews. Ray is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Magdaline (Markert) Schiller; daughter Renee Schiller Clark and husband Jeff; granddaughter Tiffany Bowden and husband Jason; great-granddaughters Alexandra Grace, Emma Nichole; brother Axel Schiller; sister Nora (Schiller) Schroeder; sisters in-law, Alice Faye (Market) Pinson, Dorothy Markert, Dee Markert and many friends. Ray proudly served his country in WWII, Battle of the Bulge with Company I, 304th Infantry, 77th Battalion, 3rd Army under Gen. George S. Patton. He was wounded in April of 1945 and medically discharged. He was awarded a Purple Heart. Ray and his brother Axel are life members of Austin VFW Post 8787. The two of them had an awesome trip together on Honor Flight Austin in October, 2013. Ray and Magdaline were married in Thorndale, Texas on June 9, 1946 by the Reverend Fred Steltzer. They were members of Redeemer Lutheran Church since 1956, being previous members of Zion Lutheran Church in Walburg. He served as an usher, both team and church head, for 60 years. Ray's working career began with TP&L; then he managed a hamburger "joint" with Magdaline. Next, he began farming in the Walburg area where he and Magdaline met many lifelong friends. The drought of the 50's found Ray looking for work; he found his calling was in the construction of bridges and roads. He worked for such wonderful employers as Rodney Larson, Charles Stockton, Harold Lott and Norman Pugh. He traveled the State of Texas building and supervising the building of hundreds of bridges. Many of those bridges are still standing to this day. He finally retired (actually Ray never retired) in 1990, when he and Magdaline sold their property on Old 183/Jollyville Road. He oversaw every nail and board being built on their home of the past 25 years in Angus Valley. Ray and Magdaline were able to do a little bit of traveling as they grew older, but Ray enjoyed his gardening and just tinkering around the house more than anything. Though never graduating from high school, Ray was known to be able to fix just about anything (or at least try). He always said he was a "jack of all trades, but a master of none". Two of the fondest memories to share - no matter who he met, he always extended his hand and greeted them with "hello, my friend"; and the second was the love of the dances that he and Magdaline would attend. Their very first date was to a dance. We are sure he is in heaven looking down on us, waiting for momma to get there so he can "dance across Texas..... "with his "fraulein". Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, Pflugerville, Tx from 6:00P.M - 8:00P.M. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1500 West Anderson Lane, at 1:30P.M. with Reverends David Schroder and Kevin Westergren officiating. Interment will follow by procession to Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery with military honors to be rendered. Any memorial donations are requested to go to one of the following: Redeemer Lutheran Church; Meals on Wheels of Austin; or The Veterans of Foreign Wars Dept of Texas Foundation. Honey, Ray, daddy, popo, grandpa, friend....you will be missed! See you in the funny paper! Online condolences may be made at www.cookwaldencapitalparks.com
