Prema Lata Agrawal, M.D.Hopewell Junction - Prema Lata Agrawal, M.D., of Hopewell Junction, NY died at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie on the night of February 23, 2017. She was 80.Prema Agrawal was born on October 28, 1936, in the town of Sardhana in Uttar Pradesh, India. She was the second child of her late mother Prakash Kumari Jain, and her late father, Jainti Prasad Jain, a Civil Engineer. Prema was raised and schooled in various places around India, as her father's work required a lot of travel. She developed a close relationship with her Aunt, Bimla Masi, and her older brother, Kishan, who both supported her throughout her youth and education. Eventually she ended up at King George's Medical College in Lucknow, India, where she received her M.D. There, she met her future husband and fellow classmate, the late Shyam N. Agrawal, M.D. They were happily married in 1958, and, after working for a few years in India, Prema and Shyam and four of their classmates immigrated here to the United States in 1959, where they began their family and continued their education and careers. Prema completed an Internship at Lowell General Hospital in Massachusetts, during which her first son, Jim Agrawal was born. A few years later, her second son, Andy Agrawal, was born. They soon moved their family to Montreal, Canada, where Dr. Prema and Dr. Shyam both completed further training at McGill University, soon receiving their M.D.s in Psychiatry and Surgery, respectively. Prema completed further training in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pathology, and eventually in Psychiatry. She also completed her Post-Graduate Degree, earning her F.R.C.P.(e) and C.R.E.P.(e). Subsequently, she completed her American Board of Psychiatry. Prema and Shyam moved back to the U.S., settling down in the Poughkeepsie area of New York where she opened a successful private practice, and worked in the local Vassar and St. Francis Hospitals for 35 years. Prema was well known in the local community, she was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry, active in her local A. Psych-Association Branch, as well as a distinguished Fellow of American Psychiatry. She was a very highly regarded Psychiatrist in the surrounding area, having changed the lives of countless of patients. She and Shyam were also known for giving back to their community, donating generously to the local Hindu Samaj Temple. The name "Prema" means "love and affection". She had a graceful beauty, and brought richness into the lives of her family and friends. She adored taking pictures of her family and friends, often carrying around a huge camera with which she composed many albums of precious memories. In most photos of herself she can be found laughing mischievously, or smiling widely and brilliantly, holding one of her grandchildren playfully in her arms. Although Prema's memory will live on in the many lives she's touched, her absence has left a hole that can never be filled and she will be greatly missed. She is survived by their two sons: Jim Agrawal and Andy Agrawal, and their two wives Deborah Agrawal and Kathleen Agrawal, respectively. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Nicholas, Alec, and Amanda of Andy & Kate, and Benjamin and Christy of Jim & Debbie, and by her older brother Krishan Jain, his wife Sudha, and their four children and two grandchildren.
