Phillip L. Barnes, 54, of Myrtle St., Corry, Pa., died unexpectedly on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Corry Memorial Hospital. He was born on November 2, 1962, in El Paso, Texas., a son of the late Robert and Janet Trausch Barnes. Phil was raised and educated in Mercer, Pa., where he graduated from Mercer Junior Senior High School in 1981. He then enlisted in the United State Air Force serving from 1981 to 1985, in England and Whitman Air Force Base in Missouri. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Mercer and began working as a store manager for Hovis Auto Supply in New Castle and Grove City. He moved to Corry in March of 2002, and continued working as a store manager for Hovis Auto Supply in Erie. This past July, Phil received the "2016 Public Relations Volunteer of the Year Award," that is awarded to local American Legion Public Relations Volunteers who conduct aggressive and effective media. He was also recognized with the prestigious "John C. "Ace" Mann Blue Cap of the Year" which is designated to recognize a Legionnaire in Pennsylvania., who exemplifies the goals and objectives set forth by the American Legion. Phil was a member of St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church in Corry, Pa., and was a member and current Commander of the Elmer C. Carrie American Legion Post #365 in Corry. Phil loved being outdoors, and had a passion for hunting, especially with his friends Bill Snyder, Jim Snyder and Ron Billig. He was also a life member of the North American Hunting Association and the NRA. Phil made friends wherever he went, he especially liked being involved with his American Legion family and extended families at Hovis Auto Supply. He will be missed by all. Phil will be sadly missed by his wife Mary C. Esswein Barnes, whom he married on June 10, 2002 in Corry, Pa.; also two sisters Janet Patterson and her husband Gary of Greenville, Pa., and Dorothy Jones of Sharon, Pa.; four brothers Jim Barnes and his companion Lori Zarecky of Hermitage, Pa., Bob Barnes of Mercer, Pa., Bill Barnes of Transfer, Pa., and Gordon Barnes and his wife Donna of Lakeland, Fla. Also surviving are sister-in-law Judi Kaiser and her husband Lou of Pittsburgh, Pa., brother-in-laws Robert Esswein and his wife Donna and Richard Esswein both of Pittsburgh, Pa., and many aunts, uncles, cousins and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends may call at the Bracken Funeral Home, Inc., 315 N. Center St., Corry, Pa., on Wednesday from 2 p.m., until 4 p.m., and 6 p.m., until 8 p.m., and attend the funeral mass on Thursday at St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church, 33 W. Pleasant St., Corry, Pa., at 11 a.m., with Rev. Mark Hoffman, Pastor of St. Thomas Church/(St. Elizabeth), presiding. Burial will be held privately by family. Memorials may be made to the Elmer C.
