Dr. Paul LongKnoxville, TNDr. Paul J. Long, of Knoxville, passed away Saturday evening, December 5, 2015 at Park West Hospital. Paul was born on May 27, 1927 in Tellico Plains, TN. He was 88 years old and a resident of the Ben Atchley State
Veterans Home.He is preceded in death by his wife, Willa Mae Williams Long. Paul is a member of Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church. He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, David and Susan Long of Ball Play; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Gary Beck of Louisville; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Paige Long; and grandchildren, Jedidiah and Natasha Long all of Lenoir City. Paul was married Nov 16, 1952 to Willa Mae Williams at her parents' home in the Ball Play community of Monroe County, TN. Paul was a veteran of
World War II and served as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corp where he trained as a Radiology Technician and operated an electroencephalograph. He received a B.S. in Physics in 1950 from Tennessee Tech and an M.S. in Industrial Education in 1970 from the University of Tennessee. He completed his Ph.D. in Education from LaSalle University, Louisiana after retirement in 1995 with his dissertation on "Training and Educating the Total Mind." Paul is a Registered Professional Engineer in Tennessee and was elected Fellow of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) in 1978. Paul is retired from the Y-12 Nuclear Weapons Facility in Oak Ridge where he was hired in 1951 as a Physicist and Supervisor of the Physical Testing Laboratory in Radiography. He also worked as Department Manager of Mechanical Testing and the Metallographic Laboratory. He retired in 1985 after 34 years of service. He later worked as a consulting engineer and QA specialist from 1987-1992. Paul had a lifelong love of art and enjoyed drawing, painting and carving since he was about 7 years old. He is noted for his paintings of historic buildings, home portraits and landscapes. One of his major works of art is his painting of the Civil War scene of the Battle of Campbell Station. The painting is displayed in the Farragut Folklife Museum. Collections of his art can be found in the East Tennessee Historical Society Museum in Knoxville and the Charles Hall Museum in Tellico Plains. Paul is the author of 4 books: Our Hill Country Heritage Volume 1, The Williams Family; Our Hill Country Heritage Volume 2, The Long Family; Thoughts in Many Colors; and Poems our Grandparents Read. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel with funeral services to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Tom Hazelwood officiating. Interment will follow at Lake View Cemetery in Lenoir City full military honors conferred by the East Tennessee Veteran's Honor Guard.
