EDMONDS Dr. Paul, 83 of Lexington, KY and formerly of Atlanta, GA passed away on Aug 31, 2016. He was born on May 18, 1933 in Elkton, KY. He was the youngest of 9 children to James Edmonds and Ellen France (Edmonds Earth-man.) He attended Kentucky State College in Frankfort (now Kentucky State University) where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. But his most thrilling accomplishment what that he met his lifelong sweetheart, Yvonne Bell at Kentucky State. They were married on December 29, 1955, just months after they graduated. In 1956 he enlisted in the United States Army and shipped off for a tour of duty in Germany. When he returned, a chance employment in a lab at the VA Hospital ignited a passion for all things microscopic. He then pursued a Bachelor of Science at Miami University, after which a Master of Science at the University of Dayton, and finally his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Cincinnati. He was a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, 1971-1983. Then a Fellow at More-house College while doing research at Emory University and the National Center for Disease Control. Finally a tenured professor of Medical Microbiology at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) for the remainder of his career. He was an active member of the American Society of Microbiology where he attended every national meeting for 50 years. He also chaired many regional committees. He published numerous research papers, a textbook, and a memoir. Left to cherish his memory are his wife and three generations; hosts of nieces and nephews, and extended family. Dr. Edmonds will be interred at Camp Nelson National Cemetery on Fri, Nov 4. A Memorial Service will take place on Sat, Nov 5, 2016 at 11am at Bluegrass United Church of Christ, 500 Don Anna Dr, Lexington. Visitation will proceed it at 10am.
