He graduated in 1940 from Belle Plaine High School where – as a quarterback on the football team – he earned the nickname "Flash". Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps serving in the Marshall Islands between 1942 and 1945. On May 13, 1945, he wed Dorothy Ann Kucera and remained married over 67 years. After his discharge, he enrolled at St. Louis University's Parks College graduating with a bachelor degree in aircraft maintenance engineering. At Parks, he was commissioned a second lieutenant [USAF Reserve], eventually being assigned to Wright-Patterson AFB. Oscar resigned his commission in 1953 and joined the Civil Service as a flight test program planner. His career spanned more than 44 years before he retired. He received the "Outstanding Civilian" award by the Wright Memorial Chapter of the Air Force Association in 1982. A resident of Fairborn for 62 years, Oscar was very active in civic affairs. He was involved with the Boy Scouts of America, PTA boards, president of high school athletic club, and Kittyhawk Rose Society. In 1980, Oscar and Dorothy received the Dedication of Service plaque for the Fairborn Rex Aukerman Classic Relays. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Ann, brother Emlyn and sister Marian Merritt.
