Norman I. FreedmanNaples, FLNorman I. Freedman, age 79, passed away peacefully after a long illness on July 2, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Avow Hospice Home in Naples, Florida, surrounded by family.He was beloved husband to Judith Borowitz Freedman of Chicago, IL, with whom he eloped to Basel, Switzerland on August 3, 1962 while serving his country with the US Third Armored Division ("Spearhead") Counterintelligence Corps in Frankfurt, Germany from 1960-1964. He moved to Naples on 11/11/2011.He was born on July 12, 1937 in Geneva, New York. A native of Ithaca, NY, he graduated with honors from Manlius Military School in 1955, and attended Cornell University, where he completed his Bachelor's and Master's studies in engineering in 1959 with honors, and his MBA with distinction in 1973.Norman held a variety of senior executive roles including Executive Vice President of Wallace Steel in Ithaca, NY, and President of Bergen Wire Rope in Lodi, NJ. He also launched two of the Southeast's leading high-end commercial printing companies, Perfect Image in Atlanta, GA, and Digital Prep Inc. (DPI) in Jacksonville, FL. A member of the Masons, he was always a highly respected figure in his community, and served on the boards of many corporate and non-profit organizations.He mastered an astounding range of hobbies. An avid yachtsman, he was one of the first sailors to design and outfit a sailboat for extended cruising, a custom J40 on which he lived with his wife in the Caribbean for two years in the 1980's. He was a member of Ithaca (NY) Yacht Club, where he was instrumental in introducing sailing and began sailing classes and racing for young members as Head of the Racing Committee. He was also a member of Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago and Commodore of Epping Forest Yacht Club in Jacksonville, and is a current member of Naples Sailing and Yacht Club. An accomplished racer, he participated in hundreds of regattas and won many trophies.In addition to yachting, he was also an accomplished master chef, extreme hiker and winter mountain climber, long-distance cyclist, expert-license ham radio operator, twin-engine airplane pilot, radio-control model airplane builder, deep-sea diver, classical guitarist, billiards champion, photographer, stock car racer and Porsche enthusiast, kayaker, woodworker, oenologue with a 5,000 bottle cellar (including an extensive collection of 1959 Burgundies), black-diamond skier, hunter, fisherman, trap and skeet shooter... the list goes on and on. He relished life, and brought his deep passion for excellence to everything he did.He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy; his grateful children, Laura Freedman and Karen Sasine; his loving grandchildren, Ariel (Jonathon) McKibben and Lauren, Adam & Rachel Sasine and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jane and Robert Sarnoff.He will be buried in the sea he loved in a private family ceremony.
